A complete lead or lead alloy convex spindle whorl, of the Roman to Post Medieval period, dating from c.AD 43 - c.AD 1650. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in form, and D shaped in cross section. The central hole is broadly circular in shape and has been cast slightly off centre. The internal diameter of the hole measures roughly 6.5 mm wide, (the base of the hole appears wider, and 11.8 mm). The obverse bears an inscription of INNO/CENTIVS/PP III, split into three lines, identifying it as a bulla of Pope Innocent III. There is the remains of a pellet border around the inscription, bulla as been cast slightly off centre. PP in the inscription stands for pastor pastorum - Shepherd of the shepherds.
