A lead weight of probable medieval date (c. AD 1200 - 1500). The weight is square with a rectangular cross-section. It exhibits a design of an integrally cast plain cross in relief on the obverse surface. The reverse is undecorated. Plain lead weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards for a wide variety of uses and can be difficult to date precisely, although most date to the late medieval - post medieval period. The date range suggested by the identifier is based on the design on the obverse. Length 42.7mm, width 37.7mm, thickness 10.6mm and weight 1.14g. …

A lead weight of unknown, probably modern, date. The weight is circular with an indistinct pattern on either side which consists of numerous lines radiating out from the centre where there are multiple peck marks . The piece measures 35.86mm in diameter, 3.95mm in thickness and weighs 34.51g, 1.214 ounces. As it is not close to a round weight in the avoisdupois system it is likely it was used for weighing down fabric etc and the decoration was casually done.

There are three verification marks: a sword at 2 o'clock (for London), an ewer (for the Founders' Company who had a Royal charter to verify trade weights) at 6 o'clock and the capital letter 'I' for either James I (1603 to 1625) or James II (1685 to 1688) at 12 o'clock. The reverse is flat but has diagonal file marks running across it. The metal has a smooth brown …

A lead suspension weight probably dating to the Medieval to Post Medieval period. The weight is sub-rectangular in shape. The top narrows to an integral suspension loop and the base is flat and protrudes slightly from the sides all around. The object is quite crude and all surfaces are pitted. The weight measures 47.89mm in length, 14.52mm in width and weighs 69.21g. Lead weights were used for a long period and lack many diagnostic features, so are difficult to date precisely although most are Medieval or Post medieval in date. A similar example can be found at SOM-BC7E70.

Cast lead weight in the shape of a truncated square based pyramid. The sides are upright in the lower part then change direction with a distinct carination to slope inwards to the flat top. There is no cast design on the top; various indents appear to be damage rather than a specific design. The reverse is plain. It measures 41.92mm by 42.61mm at the base, is 13.16mm tall and weighs 203.51 grams, just over 7 ounces. Roman and Medieval sub-pyramidal weights are catalogued in Biggs and Withers (2000:27-29) but all the examples have raised cast designs. Plain lead weights were cast lo…
