Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring of uncertain date. The ring consists of a sub-circular frame with a sub-oval cross section. There are no areas of wear, or signs of decoration. The frame is not well finished, with an irregular casting seam on its exterior edge. Diameter: 37.1mm; Thickness 3.6mm; Weight 8.55g. The ring is comparable in size and form to medieval annular buckles, although the lack of evidence for wear relating to a pin leaves this open to debate.

A copper alloy awl of an uncertain date, probably c. 2400 BC-AD 410. The awl consists of a copper alloy bar tapering to a point at one end and flattened at the other end, which is trapezoidal in plan. The awl appears to have been hammered into shape, leaving a number of facets. There are a number of striations on one face, between a 'lip' on either edge. It is sub-rectangular in cross section. Length 34.4mm; Width 4.7mm; Thickness 3.0mm; Weight 1.82g. Copper alloy awls are relatively common grave goods in Early Bronze Age graves, but they are normally larger and slightly di…

County: South Gloucestershire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A utilised red/brown quartzite pebble, of uncertain date. The stone is sub-rectangualr in plan and cross section, a pair of perpendicular facts have been created through considerable battering damage, suggesting the use of the pebble as a hammerstone. The other faces of the pebble are more rounded, however at least two have been worn sufficiently flat to suggest intentional use as a rubber or polisher. Length 73.4mm; width 59.7mm; thickness 60.4mm; weight >300g.

A red/brown quartzite polishing or rubber stone, of uncertain date. The object consists of a utilised water-rolled pebble, originally sub-oval but truncated by an unworn break at one end. There are two concave removal scars on one face, both also unworn, and presumably caused by frost fractures. The opposite face exhibits extensive evidence of being utilised to smooth or polish, worn smooth with a glossy sheen. Length 85.3mm; width 71.2mm; thickness 33.7mm; weight 279.27g.

A copper alloy bead of unknown date. The bead is biconical in form, with a slight circumferencial rib or casting seam and a central circular aperture. The bead has a dark brown patina, with areas of bright green corrosion where the surface has been lost. Dimensions: diameter 12.3mm; thickness 5.8mm; weight 2.70g. A number of very similar beads are recorded on this database with a variety of date ranges suggested, cf. Description: Roughly rectangular flat gold bar, tapered and cut at both ends. This has apparently been hammered at both ends, as it has tapered vertically towards both ends, while also expanding sideways. This may be a result of the cutting process, as a slight lip at each end suggests that the bar was cut most of the way through with an implement that was not particularly sharp, and then snapped off. Dimensions: 15.5mm (l) x 6 (8)mm (w) x 3mm (th). Weight: 3.89g Discussion: The original form of the bar is consistent with Anglo-Saxon ingots of the 7th century, including th…

An irregular, undatable piece of lead waste. No form is visible, and the object appears to be product of a large number of congealed lead drips. Length: 43.0mm, Width: 32.7mm, Thickness: 28.7mm, Weight: 96.33g. This object was recorded due to its proximity to St. Nicholas' Priory (also known as Barlynch Priory, HER: MSO8840), founded by William De Say during the reign of Henry II (AD 1154-1189).

Object type: RING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Somerset
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy ring with hexagonal cross section and slightly uneven thickness and width of unknown date. The object is undecorated but has long striations around its outer face, probably from filing or wear, and with two areas of wear where the ring is thinner. Diameter: 27.4mm, width: 4.0mm, Thickness of loop from: 4.6mm, to: 3.3mm, Weight: 7.13g. Such rings are largely undatable and can be as early as Iron Age, but it is most likely a Medieval to Post-Medieval horse harness ring, possibly to link two straps given how it is worn in two places.

Two irregularly shaped pieces of copper alloy casting waste of uncertain date. The first (34.39g) is broadly sub rectangular but with a small extension which may represent a point where molten copper had escaped, the other (27.13g) is flatter but is significantly more irregularly shaped on one face, with several pits and channels probably created by corrosion, trapped within some of these are traces of charcoal. Although undatable, these represent a larger sample also found in the field and may suggest a specialist metal working site.

An unidentified copper alloy object. Main body is a copper alloy globule which is seperated from an upwards facing arm by an incised band. This arm broadens extremely gradually as it extends and is split down the middle, for the majority of the length this is marked by a line running down the arm, however at the top there is a rounded V-shaped gap between the two halves. Possibly a nail cleaner or (perhaps more likely) an incomplete strap end or pendant. Length: 22.7mm, Width: 11.0mm, Weight: 6.87g.
