Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill type (Mackreth 2011, Part 5, Group 2.a2, enamelled panel on upper bow, lenticular elements cast below, flat wing ends type) and of 2nd century AD date (130-160 AD). Gold mourning ring with stylized skull on outside of hoop. The hoop, which is misshapen, is of flattened D cross-section. The inner face of the hoop is inscribed with the text A. E. obijt 30 Jan' 17034, in italic script (A. E. died 30th January 1703/4). Internal hoop diameter 20.07 mm x 12.7mm; band width 4mm; band thickness 1.1mm; weight 3.34g. The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation.
