Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Denbighshire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Neolithic or Early Bronze Age flint scraper The scraper is made on a flake from a polished flint axe made during the Neolithic. The dorsal surface has been retouched along the distal end to form the scraper edge. One side has suffered more recent damage and a recent flake has been lost from the ventral surface. Hard-hammer percussion removed the flake. One of the facets near the distal end has been polished suggesting the removal from a Neolithic flint axe. The flint is non-cortical and has patinated yellow-brown. Length - 37.4mm; width - 25.2mm, thickness - 7.5mm, weight - 6.2g

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Monmouthshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Prehistoric flint scraper, probably of Neolithic date The scraper appears to be incomplete, missing one side and would have broken in antiquity (with a length of 49.1mm, a surviving width of 34.7mm, a thickness of 14.1mm and a weight of 24.1g). The retouch is present on all of the presumed original edge, up to the striking platform. The flint is non-cortical and unpatinated, mid-grey.

Prehistoric flint knife, probably of Neolithic date The knife is of sub-triangular form and is incomplete, missing part of the retouched edge (with a length of 47.5mm, a width of 36.4mm, a thickness of 10.7mm and a weight of 16.8g). The retouch was confined to one edge and only survives on the distal end, abutting the cortex. The opposite edge may have been deliberately backed. Cortex is present on the distal side and there is a recessed flaw on the ventral surface. The flint has light patination.

Prehistoric flint tool, possibly a knife of Neolithic date The knife is of sub-triangular form and is complete (with a length of 56.5mm, a width at the butt of 28.9mm, a maximum thickness of 9.7mm and a weight of 15.3g). The tool is bifacially worked but largely confined to the edges and is retouched rather than pressure-flaked. The retouch extends along both edges and the proximal end has also been retouched, largely removing the striking platform. The flint is non-cortical and has patinated pale yellow -white.

Prehistoric flint flake, probably of Neolithic date, c. 4000 - 2000 BC The flint flake is a comparatively large example (at a length of 95.8mm, a width of 76.4mm, a thickness of 25.8mm and a weight of 142.8g). The flake is has a large patch of cortex surviving on its dorsal surface with a linear flaw through the surface, which is not evident on the ventral face. The striking platform shows evidence of core preparation, prior to striking and suggests a hard-hammer technology. The flint has more extensive 'milky' patination on one side facet and moderate patination elsewhere. The edg…

Probable roughout for a an axehead of Neolithic date The roughout is complete and is comparably small for an axehead (with a length of 114.3mm and a weight of 199.4g) and is bifacially worked. Much of the flaking is directed from the edges and has not significantly thinned the roughout (with a maximum thickness of 32.7mm), with one of the faces (ventral) being considerably flatter. The roughout is of oval form, with convex sides (reaching a maximum width of 52.2mm) and with no obvious suggestion of a blade. The stone has some recent damage around the edges, but otherwise has thre…
