Roman copper alloy brooch of Colchester derivative, Polden Hill (Mackreth 2011, Part 3, Transitional Type 2.b1, flat wing ends) and of mid-1st-early 2nd century AD.
The brooch in incomplete and fragmentary, missing the pin and catch-plate and broken across the top of the bow (with a length of 50mm, a depth of 16mm and a weight of 11.0g). The spring remains in place and is comparatively wide (at 39.5mm), secured around a copper alloy axis bar between lateral lugs, only one of which now survives. Roman copper alloy bow brooch fragment probably from a Trumpet or Trumpet derivative brooch of 1st or 2nd century AD date.
The brooch fragment is from a swivelling chain loop (with a surviving length of 20.3mm and a weight of 1.7g) and comprises the wire chain loop with attached frontal plate of disc form. The wire (1.2mm diameter) forms a loop at the apex (7.6mm wide) and is wider at the base (with a surviving width of 17.7mm) to accommodate the spring. The nail-cleaner is near-complete, missing the top of the suspension loop and end of the blade and is slightly distorted (with a surviving length of 55.7mm and a weight of 3.3g).
