Probable Late Medieval copper alloy dagger, knife or sword chape, perhaps of 15th or 16th century
The chape is of sheet, two-piece form, with a soldered join, now detached and is near-complete (with a length of 31.8mm and a weight of 7.0g). The chape form is asymmetric, with a swelling near the base on one side (giving a maximum width of 23.0mm and where the chape has a maximum depth of 19.1mm). Late medieval to post medieval copper alloy purse bar probably of 16th century date
The purse is represented by the loop and incomplete bar (with a weight of 15.1g) and is of Ward Perkins (1940, p 168) Type B1. The loop is sub-oval and slightly distorted (with an overall length of 50.3mm and a width near the top of 17.8mm) and converges to its base. There is no surviving decoration at the base of the loop. The badge is of circular, umbonate form and is incomplete, missing the pin and part of the rim (with a diameter of 26.4mm, a height of 6.1mm and a weight of 4.6g) probably representing a buckler. The outside of the rim is raised with a double-moulding, enhanced with raised pellets. Copper alloy openwork probable strap-end, of late medieval date.
The mount is incomplete, broken at one end and possibly also broken at the other (with a surviving length of 32.2mm and a weight of 10.7g). The wider end is straight and is the thickest surviving part of the mount (with a width of 25.1mm and a thickness of 4.2mm) and appears to be near-complete but is corroded.
