Copper alloy casting jet of uncertain date, possibly Bronze Age
The jet appears to be complete, comprising a single-runner and oval sectioned reservoir (with a length of 23.0mm and a weight of 30.0g). The oval top surface (26.7mm x 23.7mm) is concave, as the molten metal cooled. The sides converge towards the runner and are irregular, possibly suggesting use of a clay gate. The runner is of irregular sub-rectangular section (with a surviving length of 12mm and 10mm x 8mm). The surface has a dark-green to brown patina with areas of mid-green corrosion.
The jet has few diagnostic …

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Wroxeter variant type and 2nd century AD date.
The brooch in incomplete, missing the pin, foot and head-plate and with a distorted leg (with a distorted length of 56.3mm, a depth of 22mm and a weight of 17.9g). The missing pin was hinged between semi-tubular lugs on the rear of the head (with a width of 13.7mm). The lugs have considerably adhering iron corrosion, suggesting an iron axis bar and/or pin was employed. At the head is the remains of a truncated head-plate (with a surviving height of 17.2mm) and the remnant of the start of an integral c…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is incomplete, missing the pin and catch and is heavily-corroded (with a length of 52.3mm, a surviving depth of 27.5mm and a weight of 18.0g). The missing pin appears to have been hinged within semi-tubular wings, now lost. The rear of the head has adhering iron corrosion, suggesting an iron pin and/or axis bar. The trumpet head is oval (13.1mm wide and 13.7mm long), with the suggestion of a border flange but now truncated but no evidence for an integral chain-loop on the head. The upper-bo…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, missing the head and catch-plate and is heavily-corroded (with a surviving length of 45.0mm, a surviving depth of 7.5mm and a weight of 2.4g). The head is lost and was of uncertain form with a V-slot on the rear. The arched bow is slender with straight sides, gradually converging to the eroded and pointed foot (with a width and thickness at the head of 4.0mm and 2.4mm respectively). A low rib on the rear of the bow defines the remnants of the catch-plate. All surface detai…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of uncertain type, probably T-shaped or allied and of 1st or 2nd century AD date
The brooch is fragmentary, represented by the head only and is diminutive (with a surviving length of 11.9mm, a surviving depth of 5.7mm and a weight of 1.4g). The brooch employed a hinge mechanism, probably in tubular wings, which are now worn and corroded to points (with a surviving width of 12.7mm). The upper bow is of D-shaped section, also heavily worn and corroded to a point (with a width and thickness at the head of 5.0mm and 3.9mm respectively). No decoration or det…

Post medieval copper alloy toy cannon probably of 18th century date
The gun is near-complete but has some damage around the barrel and appears to have been cast in one-piece (with a length of 43mm and a weight of 9.70g). The gun has a rounded cascabel and a prominent concave vent field (10.2mm diameter) with a comparatively large vent. The barrel is corroded and worn but is mostly plain with a slightly thickened first reinforce. The muzzle is defined by a groove and is very slightly thickened (at 6.2mm). The trunnions are comparatively long and slender (29.3mm wide). The surface …

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Fragment of silver decorative mount, broken top and bottom. The outline has the superficial resemblance to spoon handle terminals, but the figurative decoration is the wrong way round, and the cast is hollow on the reverse and clearly intended to sit against a flat surface.
The mount has a tapering form, widest the base of the main motif. This has the form of a crowned reliquary bust of a female saint with long hair, facing forward. The background is filled with asymmetrical vegetal scrolls, against a rusticated surface. Below the bust is a smaller triangular panel filled with what…

The find comprises six post-medieval English coins, of Elizabeth I and Charles I, with a face value at the time of £0 10s 6d; as received at Amgueddfa Cymru, they appear to have been cleaned. No associated objects were reported.
The find represents a small, but typical assemblage from the period of the 'English' Civil War, with the coins worn through circulation roughly in proportion to their age when lost or deposited. The latest Tower coins are from 1641-3, but the group is to be dated by the Chester coin, which allowing for the effects of cleaning is in fresh condition. A roy…
