Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy decorative spherical or globular-headed stud, probably of Roman date The cast stud is fragmentary, missing the lower part of the shaft (with a surviving length of 24.0mm and a weight of 13.5g). The head is near-spherical (with a diameter of 14.0mm - 15.3mm and a height of 13.2mm) with flat facets on both the apex and base. No applied decoration is evident on the head. The integral shaft is of sub-rectangular, faceted section with straight and near parallel sides for their surviving length (4.7mm wide and 3.6mm thick with a surviving length of 10.7mm). The surface has…

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Cardiff
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy looped mount, probably of Roman date The cast mount comprises a sub-circular loop on an integral domed base (with an overall length of 40.3mm and a weight of 38.3g). The loop (35.1mm wide x28.6mm high external and 23.9mm wide and 20.2mm high internal) is circular sectioned (5 - 6mm diameter) and is undecorated. There is a slight suggestion of wear facets on the interior of the top of the loop, which if correct, would seem to suggest strap-rubbing. The base is circular and hemispherical (with a basal diameter of 26.2mm and a height of 11mm) and has a grooved border ar…

Copper alloy looped mount possibly a vessel escutcheon of Roman date The mount is incomplete, missing part of the loop and is heavily-worn and corroded (with a surviving length of 43.4mm and a weight of 16.2g) and is of anthropomorphic sub-oval and domed form. The oval domed head (28.7mm long, 23.9mm wide and 10.6mm deep) appears to be inverted in relation to the loop being at the top. The circular loop is integral and rectangular sectioned (with an internal diameter of 10.1mm, an external diameter of 15.5mm and 3.6mm thick) and has no surviving applied decoration. Below the lo…

Copper alloy decorative terminal, possibly from a pin of Roman date The object is fragmentary, represented by the damaged terminal; a shaft fragment (with a surviving length of 33.4mm and a weight of 3.4g). The top of the terminal was conical (with a basal diameter of 7.0mm) and is heavily corroded, with a differential corrosion, beneath which the terminal is of faceted-globular form before a moulding above the top of the shaft. The shaft is circular sectioned and gradually widens (from a diameter of 2.8mm to 5.0mm) before narrowing slightly towards the break. The surface has a d…

The surface has a mid-green patina with file marks evident on the underside. The weight now weighs 2.92g, equivalent to 0.103 ounce and it is possible that the weight was a one-eighth ounce weight under the Mercantile, Avoirdupois or Tower systems (equivalent to 3…

Possible copper alloy plate from a brooch of uncertain type, possibly Roman The object comprises a fragmentary and distorted circular disc of sheet metal (with a maximum distorted diameter of 34.2mm, a thickness of 0.1mm and a weight of 2.4g). The rear has what appears to be an integral catch-plate adjacent to the edge (with a depth of 7.8mm and a length of 6.2mm). There is the possible suggestion that the plate has broken across a central hole. There is no decoration evident on the surface but there appears to be remnants of tinned or silvered surface on the front of plate. Else…

The break occurred in antiquity and there is no socket base evident. The blade is convex between the tips and the blade edge is asymmetric, possibly through wear at one end. There are a number of nicks along the blade edge, however it is unclear whether these are contemporary with the use of the axe or oc…
