Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: the Vale of Glamorgan

The reported object is a silver signet ring, now incomplete (part of hoop missing). It has a flat, circular bezel for the matrix, which has the form of a round-petalled quatrefoil within pellets in the inter-leaf spaces, within a single circular rope border. The shoulders are demarcated by simple transverse grooves, and the upper part of the hoop is decorated with triple vertical ridges and a random and unevenly punched pattern of open circles, presumably intended to represent pellets/pearls. A transverse groove and two hatched dashes below this indicate a change in the lower hoop dec…

Internal hoop diameter 17.6mm; band width 3.8mm; band thickness 0.6mm; weight 1.76g. The ring has not undergone any cleaning or conservation. A similar band style, with raised mid spine, occurs on a late medieval gold decorative ring found at Jordanstown, …

The find comprises two groats (4d pieces) of Edward III (1327-77), minted at London: 1. Series C, c.1351-2, North 1147; 4.16 g / 64.2 grains 2. Series D, c. 1354-5, North 1163; 4.30g / 66.3 grains.
