A Roman copper-alloy 'bow and fantail' type brooch, dating from the mid 1st to mid 2nd century AD. The axis bar 'cylinder' has a semicircular cross section, and there is a central slit, via which the now-missing pin would have been attached. At either end of this cylinder is a pair of vertical grooves. Surmounting this cylinder is a vertical chain loop. Located below the cylinder, the deeply arched upper bow flares towards its centre, before tapering again. The upper surface of this wider central area is decorated by a circular cell surrounded by a concentric ring, both of which ar…

An incomplete copper-alloy Aucissa type brooch of Early Roman date. The bow is of sub-oval cross section and has a deeply curved, C-shaped upper two thirds. In the lower third, the bow curves backwards, forming a near-vertical foot with moulded knob at the base. The head is heavily damaged, with no remaining trace of the axis bar cylinder or pin; however, iron staining on the head indicates the former composition of the axis bar and, possibly, the pin also. Unusually, the catchplate, located on the underside of the lower bow and foot, has been made separately, from iron, and has bee…

An incomplete copper-alloy bow brooch of Late Iron Age date. The bow has a circular cross section and is decorated on its upper surface by a pair of incised saltires, the lower flanked by two transverse grooves and bordering ridges. At the top, the bow narrows into the one remaining spring coil, which is of rectangular cross section and has been formed by bending the wire backwards, so that its broken distal end now abuts the top of the bow. At its bottom end, the bow bifurcates to form the now-damaged foot and catchplate. No exact parallel could be found for this brooch; howev…

A medieval copper-alloy harness pendant consisting of the suspension mount retaining part of the pendant. The mount has abraded through at all of its attachment perforations, to varying degrees, but is otherwise complete. It is formed of a broadly square plate, with perforations in each corner. Hanging down from the plate are two attachment prongs, which return as a fold which is closed on the reverse. An axis bar is retained at the fold, and the suspension loop of a pendant is retained in the slot between them. The front of the suspension mount depicts the cross of Toulouse, raised w…

A secondary flint waste flake of prehistoric date. The pear-shaped flake retains some of its original cortex on the dorsal surface, and the ventral surface is a recorticated off-white. There is no visible bulb-of-percussion or rippling, and this may be a thermally fractured, natural, piece rather than a struck flake.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy stirrup-strap mount of late early-medieval date (c. 11th century AD). It belongs to Williams's Class A, Type 12 mount (Williams 1997, 72-73), rendered in openwork. The mount is of a broadly lozenge-shaped type, but has lost its apex, including its upper attachment loop due to an old break, at a weak point. Within the lozenge-shaped frame is an extant central diagonal cross that enclosed four lozenge-shaped apertures; the upperrmost 'aperture' has now broken through as a reult of the damage. On its front it has circular projecting bosses. One boss is …

Object type: AXEHEAD
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy fragment of a Bronze Age axe. The upper side represents the point of the break and has a slight inward curvature. The two flat surfaces of the blade converge towards the bottom, where there is a largely bluntened cutting edge. The right-hand side of the piece is slightly concave, whereas the left is convex, with a spur at the top corner. Both the upper and lower surfaces of the piece display vertical slash marks. It is unclear as to what type of axehead this piece represents, although the fact that it is solid throughout suggests is may be part of a palstave.

County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper-alloy hand guard from a Roman sword or similar bladed weapon. The object is of flat section, elongated-sub-oval in plan, with a lenticular aperture at the centre, in which the blade would have been located. The upper surfaces slope gently downwards, towards this aperture, which has a bevelled edge. A moulded ropework line extends around the centre of the guard's vertical outer face; this ropework line, a typical feature on bracelets of the Early Roman period, provides the basis of the suggested dating.
