A copper-alloy awl or tracer, probably Iron age or Roman date (100 BC - AD 350). Similar tools are thought to be used for leather working, although they could also function as punches / gravers for metalworking. The awl has a tapering (pyramidical) blade of sub-rectangular section turning circular near the point, and a rectangular sectioned tang. The section of the tang is much smaller and the upper blade of the awl acted as a stop for the handle; this would have ensured that the handle did not 'bite back' and split whilst in use. Probably an Iron Age or Roman copper-alloy awl or tracer, for leather working. The awl has a tapering blade of sub-rectangular section turning circular near the point, and a rectangular sectioned tang. It is similar to the example from Braintree (see SF-8AC0B6).
Measuring 52.4mm in length. The blade is 5.6mm x 5.1mm at the sub rectangular cross section, and is 13.6mm long. The rectangular cross section of the tang is 4.7mm x 3.5mm, with a length of 38.8mm which tapers to a point.
