Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Two Medieval copper alloy domed thimbles, one of which has been inserted into the other and the bases squashed together. The outer thimble is marked with hand drilled pits of varying sizes in roughly concentric circles. Small portions of the outer thimble are missing due to corrosion and damage. It is possible that it had a hole on the top of the dome, but this is difficult to tell due to the missing pieces. Two horizontal grooves are visible just above the base of the outer thimble. While there are no other examples of two thimbles squashed together have been found on the database…

Object type: KEY (LOCKING)
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy rotary casket key of Medieval date. The bow is cicular and attached to the shank just above the mid-point. The shank is sub-rectangular in section and has a hollow, cyclindrical end. The bit is relatively simple in form, it is sub-rectangular with a small square cleft cut out on either side. The key is mid-green in colour. A number of very similar rotary keys are shown in G. Egan's 'Medieval Households' pages 111-119. From the size of the key and the presence of a hollow shank it is likely that the key would have been used to lock a casket rather than a door…
