Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete cast lead alloy conical hanging weight with a narrow iron suspension loop running through it, of uncertain date. The iron wire does not protrude through the base like similar examples; therefore it is unclear whether the wire runs the length of the weight or if it simple loops through the top of the weight. It measures 27.91 mm in diameter, 28.64 mm high and weighs 105 grams. Because lead weights of this type were relatively easy to produce locally and were distributed throughout a wide period of time, they are difficult to date precisely. These types seem to date to b…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy spear probably dating to the Middle or Late Bronze Age (c. 1500-800 BC). The fragment consists of the tip of the spear blade, which is triangular in plan. The tip is slender with a pronounced middle rib which tapers to the edges in 'wings', creating a rounded lozenge-shaped cross section. The shaft opening is circular in shape on the underside and is completely filled with soil and other possible material. The metal is of a dark green colour, but there are areas of reddish brown corrosion and indication of chalky encrustation, presumably from t…

A very worn and clipped Medieval silver Three-halfpence of Elizabeth I (1558-1603); London mint; uncertain initial mark and date. Second Issue, c. 1561-1582. This coin has been pierced through the legend at 'SINE' on the obverse and in the middle of 'LONDON' on the reverse. Most of the detail and legends of the coin are missing due to extreme surface wear and damage; in addition to the damage, the circular punch and a small section of either clipped or torn coin further disfigure its surface. Cf. North 1991 Vol II, No. 2000.
