An incomplete ceramic rim sherd originating from a very large storage jar of probable Roman date, c. 43-410 AD. The sherd demonstrates a rounded everted rim, with a sharply angled shoulder that extends downwards before truncating abruptly in old damage. The fabric is rather variable in colour, mostly being a light orangey/pinkish brown colour though the broken section reveals some grey and black oxidised sections that have fired differently. Very frequent inclusions of sand temper are visible, ranging from small to medium size. Preserved in somewhat abraded condition with several hair…

A sherd from a German Bartmann or Bellarmine stoneware jar dating c. 16th-17th century. The sherd is broadly sub-rectangular in plan view and comprises most of the moulded bearded face which adorned the neck of these ceramic vessels. The vessel has been manufactured on a wheel, evinced by the presence of prominent rilling marks on the inside surface, while the outer surface has been decorated with a speckled salt glaze which gives the sherd a mottled whitish brown appearance.

A fragment of a body sherd of wheel-thrown colour coated ware, originating from a cup or beaker of Roman date, c. 100-300 AD. The section of the sherd demonstrates an inner oxidised surface of light grey colouration and no obvious signs of temper, which has subsequently been covered with a darker grey barbotine. The inner surface of the sherd demonstrates light rilling marks from the manufacturing process, while the outer surface has been decorated with an incised rendition of a frond or fern, only the mid-section of which survives. Preserved in relatively fresh condition with only sl…

Object type: TILE
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Norfolk

A fragment of a ceramic roman hypocaust flue (box flue) tile, dating from the 1st-4th centuries AD. The tile fragment, which is a light reddish brown colour, is 94mm long down its longest axis, 84mm wide at its widest point, 20mm thick and weighs 141.86 grammes. In plan view it is sub-triangular in shape, and sub-rectangular in profile. The upper surface of the tile does not retain any traces of mortar, but has been decorated with a series of linear striations in two lines at a 45 degree angle to each other, which create a 'combed' effect.

A body sherd of Medieval sandy-ware or a similar derivative type, dating c. 1100-1400. The sherd demonstrates frequent inclusions of fine sand temper, with larger whitish quartz inclusions occuring more infrequently. The outer surface of the sherd is a brownish red oxidised colour, while the innner surface evidently was fired in a more reduced atmosphere, being of a medium to dark grey colour. The edges of the sherd as well as the surfaces demonstrate signs of rolling and abrasion consistent with deposition in a ploughsoil environment, though aside from this the piece survives in rela…
