A complete cast copper-alloy quoit-headed pin dating to the Middle Bronze Age, c. 1500-1200 BC. The pin consists of a flat circular head with a large central aperture, demonstrating small decorative incisions or notches radiating from its inner edge. The bottom of the head transitions into a circular-sectioned shank, which extends downwards and eventually tapers to a sharp point, initially curving outwards but then returning back on itself as a result of post-depositional distortion. Preserved in very good condition with an even greenish and brown patina, the pin measures 82.70mm long…

County: West Sussex

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin, mount or stud probably dating to the Late Iron Age or early Roman period, c. 100 BC-100 AD. The mount consists of a deeply recessed hemispherical head, from the bottom of which a rather squat and slightly bent sub-cylindrical shank protrudes, tapering slightly before abruptly truncating in an old break. The recessed head itself would most likely have contained enamel, though now none of this survives. The object is preserved in fair condition despite the loss of its enamel setting, with an even greenish patina covering most of its surfaces. lt meas…

A complete cast copper-alloy ring-headed pin dating from the Early Iron Age (c. 800-600BC). The pin has been formed from a single piece of circular-sectioned copper alloy, which tapers to a sharp point at its terminal end. The very head of the pin has been formed by bending one end around on itself so that it touches the top of the shank, which itself bends around in a heavily kinked and slightly elongated 'S' shape. The head of the pin demonstrates decoration in the form of two sets of transverse notches (4-5 in each), which are located at the junction of the open head with the shank…

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex

An incomplete cast copper-alloy pin dating to the Early Medieval period (Middle Saxon), c. 700-850 AD. The object exhibits a facetted sub-cuboidal head which narrows towards its base into a now much eroded collar, before tapering further to form an elongated circular-sectioned shank. Towards its terminus, the shank bends slightly before truncating abruptly in an old break which has removed c. 1/2 to 1/3 of the total shank. The pin is plain except for the four main sides of the head, each of which (excluding the uppermost face) is decorated with a single ring-dot motif. Preserved in re…

An incomplete copper-alloy cast early-medieval pin, dating c. 700-900 AD. Only the head and a portion of the shank survive extant, but apart from being broken the find is preserved relatively well with an even green patina. The pin-head is polyhedral in shape with a flat top, and each side (including the top, though this is not visible in the photographs provided) has been decorated with a large stamped ring-dot motif which resides within a series of diamond-shaped and triangular shaped facets. The latter are broadly orthorhombic in form, and the main ring-dot motif which resides on…
