An almost complete post-medieval copper-alloy mount, whose large size suggests that this was attached to strap, possibly from a harness (c. 1500-c. 1700). This mount consists of a main element of lozenge-shape, convex at the front and concave at the reverse. At the front, there is a raised saltire cross with a pellet at the centre. Aligned with the apexes of the saltire, and therefore at forty-five degrees to the lozenge, are engraved parallel lines, generally three, which give the effect of having been 'combed'. Each short side of the lozenge is rounded. One of the other apexes ex…

A complete medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting, a mount in the form of a crowned king's head. The eyes, mouth, and cheeks are denoted by etched grooves, whereas the nose is accurately formed. The back is concave, in the centre of which is an integral attachment stud. The mount is in good condition. Length 17.4 mm, Width 11.3 mm, and Weight 1.6 g. Several similar 'king's head / crowned head studs are illustrated on the PAS database (cf: LIN-BF58C6 and HESH-851BC3). From the broad style a later medieval 13th - early 15th centuries is suggested. The style of the decoration would su…
