A cast lead artefact, probably a weight, of uncertain, but probably Medieval date. In shape it is slightly more than a hemisphere. It is domed, with one side more rounded and steeper; the other side is shallower and more angled. The object has a slightly concave base with scratch and wear marks. There is an unusual off set point near the apex, but there is no iron loop. The object stands 12.6mm high, has a maximum diameter of 21.9mm and weighs 31.13 grams. It is undecorated and has a well developed creamy white-brown patina. At 31.1g, this object has the same mass as an ounce in …

A possible cast lead alloy weight of possibly Roman date (AD 43-410). The object is sub triangular in plan, with a trapezoidal projection from the centre of the wide end. It has an elongated tear drop-shaped perforation at the tapered end which is filled with iron corrosion. The object is crudely made and appears to have extra blobs of metal pressed onto both faces. The object has a well developed creamy white patina flecked with a creamy brown.A deep gouge cutting into one edge appears to be post depositional damage. This object is cautiously identified as a possible weight whic…

A cast lead alloy weight with a probable Medieval or Post-Medieval date. The weight is sub circular and discoidal, measuring 30.9mm in diameter and is 7.3mm thick and weighs 11.58g (1.57oz). One face has a larger concave dip than the other making the rim more prominent; the original design is no longer distinguishable due to wear and damage; the opposite face has what appears to be four counter-relief stamped dots. The weight has a shiny creamy medium brown patina.

A cast lead alloy Post Medieval shield shaped weight dating from about 1500-1800. It has been roughly cast and has a slightly concave base; it is undecorated. The material has a number of deep gouges and scratches due to wear and damage; there is also a roughly carved 'W' on the upper surface. The weight has a light-medium grey patina with small areas of ferrous corrosion probably indicating an iron handle. It is in fair condition and weighs 477g (just over 1 pound); it is possible that the original weight was 1.5lbs but this has been reduced due to damage and wear and the loss of the…

A cast copper alloy weight dating from the 9th or 10th century. It is in the form of a fourteen-sided polyhedron; effectively a cube with the corners cut off. Eight of the sides are equilateral triangles, the other six are rectangular. Each of the rectangular sides is decorated with a cartouche bordered by small incisions and containing two punched annulets. Each triangular face has a single annulet. There are other weights known with two dots. Compare database records for other polyhedral weights: SWYOR-3C5372, NMS-E6D367, CAM-F8E526, DENO-942613 and DENO-941C56. The weight measures …

A cast lead alloy weight in the shape of a heart dating from about the Medieval to Post-Medieval periods. The weight has a raised design consisting of a small cross in the centre with a pellet in each angle. The top also appears to have had a raised border but this has been worn away. The bottom of the weight is flat and smooth but it is slightly concave in the centre. It weighs 3 and 3/4oz so probably originally weighed 4oz. The weight has a creamy medium brown patina with the design being enhanced by a creamy light brown patina. Compare also to PAS record IDs: NARC-2E1212 and NLM708…

It weighs 272g (or 9 and 5/8oz). This weight has been heavily damaged and is bent just above the lis; a deep puncture is seen on the crease where the weight has been bent. The weight has a creamy brown patina with most areas of wear and damage demarcated by a creamy grey patina. A cast lead, shield shaped weight, probably dating from AD1450-1650. Unlike most weights of this type, it carries no markings, having a plain upper surface. At some time, it has been pierced, just below the upper edge, by a large, rectangular ferrous nail or stud: this may be in two parts as the stud is horizontal on the upper surface and vertical on the reverse. The iron stud may be part of a loop to allow the weight to be hung on a balance arm. The weight is 50.6mm long, 39.8mm wide and 18.4mm thick. It weighs 103.68gm which is 3.6oz, so it was probably intended as a four ounce weig…

A crudely cast lead weight of uncertain date, but probably post medieval, AD 1500-1800. It is roughly triangular and there is a circular piercing through the apex of the triangle. The underside is flat, but the upper surface is domed; this dome ends abruptly in a flat, almost vertical surface at the base of the triangle. The shape of this dome results in a considerable thickness of metal and a weight of 163.76gm. There is no decoration or other marking. The weight is 41.3mm long, 37.8mm wide and 20.9mm thick. At 5.8oz this would seem to be an irregular weight.

A cast lead Medieval weight dating from the 13th and 14th Centuries onwards. It is sub circular in plan and flat in profile, with a sloping top and flat base. It is shallower at one side and there is a possible border design. There may also have been a design in the centre but the weight is too worn to be precise. The object weighs 224g (7.9oz), so was probably intended to be an 8oz weight. The weight has a grey-brown patina. There are deep scratches in the material demarcated by a dark grey colour. A probable cast lead weight. It is undated but may be Post-Medieval to Modern in date. The object is semi-cylindrical in section and is sub-rectangular in plan. It has slightly concave sides and a flat back and flat base. A small knop is present at the top of the weight and may be the remainder of a suspension loop. The design looks like a cylindrical weight which has been cut in half, but there is no evidence of later alteration to the object, and it is presumed that it was cast in this shape. At 0.6oz, it may have been intended as a half ounce weight. The weight has a medium-brown p…
