A worn and corroded lead-alloy weight of uncertain date, probably dating to between the Roman-early Modern periods. The weight is circular in plan and hemispherical in section, with a convex upper surface and is pierced through the height by a moderate central circular aperture. It measures 26.8 mm in diameter with the aperture 5.2mm in diameter at the upper surface and 6.1mm at the lower; it is 11.2 mm thick and weighs 40.52 grams. This item has a light to mid grey white colour as a result of corrosion. Plain weights were cast locally in lead from the Roman period onwards and are h…

A worn and incomplete fragment of cast copper-alloy of uncertain date. The fragment is 'C' shaped in plan, and sub-circular to sub-rectangular in section (max.4.93x3.81mm) with a steeply bevelled upper interior surface. The two terminals of this fragment are worn, but suggest a prior continuation of this object, whilst the upper surface has suffered slight damage. This object has a mid-dark green corrosion colour. Although this artefact is uncertain the colour of the surface is suggestive to the recorder of a possible prehistoric or Post Medieval date. Measures 32.83x27.95x3.81mm an…

Object type: CHISEL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small cast copper-alloy chisel of uncertain date, possibly Roman-Medieval. The chisel is roughly triangular in plan, ranging from sub-triangular to sub-rectangular in cross-section. The narrow end is flat and sub-rectangular and the wider blade-end is flat and sub-triangular. It has an even dark green patina in keeping with objects of this date in Sussex. However, due to insufficient diagnostic features, it is difficult to suggest a specific date for this object. The chisel measures 37.2 mm long, 7.15 mm wide, 4.9 mm thick and weighs 6.6 grams.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly worn but probably complete cast copper-alloy unidentified object of unknown date. This object is formed from a circular in plan ring with a central quatrefoil aperture, and is sub-oval to sub-rectangular in section. Extending from the central aperture to either side of the ring and on both surfaces are two cast ridges which are 'U' shaped in plan; in profile these connect to form an uneven 'X'. It is possible that these recessed areas with raised ridges might have held a strap or fastening, although no traces of wear are visible to the interior surface. The body of the ring…

A very worn and clipped possible silver coin of uncertain date and ruler. The coin has extensive wear on both obverse and reverse faces but both depict stylised raised designs that bear similarity to the imagery depicted on Iron Age silver units and gold staters. A worn and corroded fragment of an unidentified object of uncertain date. This artefact is formed of a sub-rectangular in plan central form which tapers and is broadly 'D' shaped in cross section. In the centre of this form is an uneven rupture in the body, likely resulting from an air bubble in the casting process. Towards the opposite end just beyond the miscast section, a raised ridge crosses the body of the fragment, before the body splits into two extensions. This artefact has a light green colour which can be paralleled in cast copper-alloy artefacts from Roman through to Post M…

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A worn and corroded fragment of a cast copper-alloy unidentified object of uncertain date. This artefact is formed of a rectangular in plan flattened component which has an interior ridge, and a thick circular extension which has broken through the course of the loop. The hoop extends perpendicular to the flattened rectangle. The differential thickness makes identification difficult, and the light green colour of this fragment could render association with artefacts from the Prehistoric through to Medieval period.

Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and worn fragment of an uncertain cast copper-alloy artefact of uncertain date. It has two asymmetrical edges or possible flanges, one of which is 20.1mm in thickness tapering to 11.6mm, whilst the other is 15.7mm to 10.5mm. The central recessed element is broadly flat and creates an 'I' shaped section, and is 7.3mm thick. The object has been recorded as it potentially could be a fragment of a badly cast Middle Bronze Age palstave; however, the middle area is unusually thin for a palstave septum and the casting line at one side is unusual for such an object. Metallurgical…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A slightly worn copper-alloy Roman radiate 'minim' coin of an uncertain third century ruler (c. AD 260-296). The 'minim' is formed by the cutting down of the larger radiate coin. The obverse depicts a clearly defined radiate crown and curled hair facing right, whilst the reverse possibly depicts the body of an animal moving right, with two short back legs to the left of the coin. It is possible that there are two arching lines above the animal's body indicating horns, such as those found on reverse types of Gallienus (AD 260-268). The detail on the obverse suggests the use of a non-b…
