A nearly complete cast copper-alloy Medieval bar mount dating to the 14th century AD. The mount is almost complete as only one of the two separate rivets which would have attached the mount to a strap is missing. The mount is formed of a central oval body, from which two sub-rectangular terminal lobes extend. All are hemispherical in section, with a concave indentation to the underside in the centre of each lobe. The upper surface of the central oval lobe is decorated with diagonal incisions that have created raised ridges; there are eleven indentations to one diagonal with four much …

The raised central square form of the mount is pierced by a central circular aperture, which might have contained a now absent rivet for attachment. A slight circular indentation is visible around this aperture to the upper surface. The exterior edges of this artefact are slightly cri…

A complete cast copper-alloy Post Medieval gilt mount with integral pointed lugs dating to the 17th century. The mount takes the form of a cross fleuretty in plan, with each of the lower curved leaves of the trifoliate terminals adjoining that of the next branch, creating an enclosed circular form. Four small circular apertures, one in each quarter, have been formed between the branches. In the centre of the cross is a single raised pellet within a lozenge. The underside of the mount is flat, and retains the two integral pointed lugs; these have been bent at almost 90 degrees into the…

An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy Roman openwork belt mount probably dating to the 3rd century AD. The mount is pelta shaped in plan and hemispherical in section, with a flattened underside and convex upper surface. Both of the original terminals have broken short of their intended form, whilst a small section of the central projection remains but this has also broken short of its intended length. On the reverse, an integral circular in section shank projects at 90 degrees to the body of the mount, and terminates in a wide flattened head; this would have secured the mount to a …

An incomplete and worn cast copper-alloy possible mount of probable Roman date. The object appears to have been miscast, with a large area of solid copper-alloy retained in one of the apertures and an uneven and unfinished appearance overall. This object is sub-oval in plan, with a convex upper edge and a slightly concave lower edge, and is rectangular in section. Two large circular apertures are located towards the lower edge of the upper surface; these are bevelled internally, with traces of the miscast copper-alloy appearing to conceal much of the right side aperture. To either sid…

A complete cast copper-alloy Medieval bar mount of probable 12th-14th century date. The mount is formed of a sub-oval central lobe from which the two arms of the bar extend in a sub-triangular in plan form to terminate in a sub-oval knop. The mount is broadly hemispherical in section across the bar and the central lobe, but the upper surface of the central lobe is also slightly flattened. In the centre of the bar mount through the sub-oval lobe is a moderate circular aperture (diameter 4mm), and at each of the knops a single circular in section rivet is retained in situ; these measure…

A fragment of a worn and corroded cast copper-alloy possible mount of possible Medieval date. The fragment is sub-oval in form and has very worn and abraded irregular edges; is slightly convex in profile, with the underside exhibiting slight concavity. On the upper surface of this fragment are a series of cross-hatched incised lines, and the remains of one complete and two partially formed circular apertures in a triangular formation. These two partial apertures are not visible on the underside, which may suggest that this fragment was a trial or error piece that was possibly not fini…

An incomplete, worn and corroded cast copper-alloy Roman mount. The mount is formed of a circular in plan suspension loop which is 'D' shaped in section (measuring 15.9mm in diameter, with the aperture 8.3mm in diameter), which extends to form a sub-rectangular in plan bar. In the centre of the mount, below the suspension loop are two raised elliptical forms which extend horizontally (total width of 33.5mm). Between these forms is a single circular aperture, possibly intended to assist with attachment. From this, the body of the mount then narrows and tapers inwardly to form the recta…
