Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn and corroded probable strap fitting in the form of a clasp of probable Post-Medieval to Early-Modern date. This artefact is formed of a central lozengical in plan and flat in section body with a single rectangular in plan bar extending horizontally at either end. To the attachment end, the rectangular bar expands further to a sub-oval form, with the exterior edge of the appearing to have a slight central curved recessed portion, creating one sub-rectangular knop to either side. Through this sub-oval form is a single rivet, visible most clearly to the underside of the fitting; i…

Object type: STRAP FITTING
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A slightly worn but probably complete cast copper-alloy unidentified object of unknown date. This object is formed from a circular in plan ring with a central quatrefoil aperture, and is sub-oval to sub-rectangular in section. Extending from the central aperture to either side of the ring and on both surfaces are two cast ridges which are 'U' shaped in plan; in profile these connect to form an uneven 'X'. It is possible that these recessed areas with raised ridges might have held a strap or fastening, although no traces of wear are visible to the interior surface. The body of the ring…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A nearly complete cast copper-alloy Medieval bar mount dating to the 14th century AD. The mount is almost complete as only one of the two separate rivets which would have attached the mount to a strap is missing. The mount is formed of a central oval body, from which two sub-rectangular terminal lobes extend. All are hemispherical in section, with a concave indentation to the underside in the centre of each lobe. The upper surface of the central oval lobe is decorated with diagonal incisions that have created raised ridges; there are eleven indentations to one diagonal with four much …

All are hemispherical in section, with a concave indentation to the underside in the centre of each lobe. The upper surface of the central oval lobe is decorated with seven horizontal grooves which have created a series of raised ridges; these ridges have a number of small finer vertical striations across them creating a cross-hatch pattern. Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval harness pendant dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The pendant is sub-triangular in plan and broadly flat in section, with an integral sub-oval attachment loop. To the lower portion of the pendant are two small concave removals creating a sub-rectangular projection from the triangular body. It is possible that this may have continued but has broken in previous damage. The attachment loop has a circular aperture for attachment to the suspension mount and a single rectangular in section pin retains in situ. This pin is covered in red-brown corrosion sugg…

A fragment of worn Late Early-Medieval (11th century) copper-alloy strap-fitting of the 'socketed hook' type, consisting of the broken ring at the open-end of the socket.
The ring is oval in profile with a central flat in section diamond detail to the upper surface. This diamond has a small triangular removal to each of the two unattached ends, with the arms of the ring extending to either side. These extensions are oval in section and formed of cast oval in plan knops which have broken short of their intended length at both ends - they would have extended into the back of the st…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy Early Early-Medieval (Anglo-Saxon, c.410-700) unidentified object, possibly a die stamp. It is sub-rectangular in plan and broadly flat in section. The upper edge of the fragment appears complete, with the lower edge slightly uneven, suggesting prior continuation of this artefact. The upper surface depicts a central stylised figure composed of a central oval face and elongated narrow torso, wearing a helmet with two large curved horns above. The oval face of the figure is raised from the flat body of this artefact and appears convex in section. In the c…

A slightly worn Medieval copper-alloy square mount probably dating to c. AD 1200-1400. The mount is formed from a piece of sheet copper-alloy which has been pressed or stamped to the square in plan form; it is broadly flat in section, with a raised upper surface and a recessed underside and is very thin. The raised central square form of the mount is pierced by a central circular aperture, which might have contained a now absent rivet for attachment. A slight circular indentation is visible around this aperture to the upper surface. The exterior edges of this artefact are slightly cri…

The strap fitting is rectangular in plan and flat in section, and formed from a single piece of copper-alloy which has been bent in half and riveted together, maintaining a space in between for the strap. The copper-alloy circular in section rivet is retained in situ to the end of the strap fitting. The upper surface terminates in a square cast motif with three small nicks to the lower edge and sides; th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A worn and corroded fragment of a cast copper-alloy Post Medieval hooked tag dating to the 16th century AD (c. AD 1500-1600). This hooked tag is incomplete as the lower portion of the body and curved hook are now absent. The central body of the fragment is formed from an openwork moulded trefoil knot, known as a Hungerford knot, which would have been decorated with hatching. Extending from the central knot is a trapezoidal in plan attachment loop; this is formed from a single rectangular bar that attaches to the body at each end by a now heavily worn moulded rosette. The reverse is fl…

The fragment is rectangular in plan and broadly 'L'-shaped in section, with the exterior edge sloping gently whilst the interior edge falls away more steeply. The exterior edge retains traces of incised decoration which incorporates possible letters and spirals, although this is now difficult to discern as a result of the wear and corrosion on the fragment; the interior side is undecorated. This artefact has a dark green-brown colour overall. This fragment appears …
