Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Medieval copper alloy seal matrix probably of 14th century date. The matrix is near-complete, missing the top of the loop (with a surviving length of 17.4mm and a weight of 6.8g). The damaged loop was circular (with an internal diameter of 2.4mm) above a ribbed moulding, which is now worn. The handle is hexagonally faceted, with concave sides expanding to the circular seal die (18.3mm diameter). The central device depicts an upright beast, probably a monkey facing left with an upright and curled tail, with a human head in profile. The encircling legend reads: * I WAS A MAN. (I was a m…

Early Medieval copper alloy pin terminal from a brooch, probably of penannular or pseudo-penannular type and of 8th or 9th century date The pin is fragmentary and is represented by the head only (with a surviving length of 20.0mm, a maximum surviving width of 17.2mm, and a weight of 3.3g). The head is of sub-triangular form although the periphery is corroded and some of the detail has been lost. There appears to have been three lentoid lobes or crescentic cups, two of which survive. The central panel is circular (11.3mm diameter) and is recessed. Within the circular panel is a simple i…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Copper alloy bell, probably of post medieval date, c. 18th century The bell is near complete, missing the clapper with some damage around the top (with a length of 58mm and a weight of 80.9g). The integral rectangular loop is irregular (13mm tall, 14.4mm wide and 6.5m thick); enclosing an oval perforation (8.3mm long and 5.6mm wide). The apex of the loop on one side is heavily worn with a concave facet. The top of the bell has two circular perforations (3.6mm and 3.9mm diameter) surrounded by iron corrosion, presumably where a wire was attached to the missing clanger. The other side…

Roman copper alloy bow brooch of Trumpet type and of 1st to 2nd century AD date The brooch is near-complete, missing the spring and the chain-loop (with a length of 45.1mm, a depth of 18.9mm and a weight of 5.1g). The missing spring would have coiled around a single pierced lug on the rear of the head. Remnants of iron corrosion indicate that the axis bar was iron and suggest the spring may also have been iron. The head is near-circular (9.1mm wide) with the remnants of a broken chain-loop at the apex. The upper bow is of D-shaped section (6.6mm wide and 4.6mm thick at the head) …

The missing pin was hinged between twin lugs, positioned beneath the damaged chain-loop. The remnants of the pin and axis bar suggest they were made of iron. The central area on the rear of the brooch is dished and the eroded catch-plate survives as a stub on the rear rounded basal lug. The periphery of the brooch appears to have been enh…
