Object type: HAMMERSTONE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Appears to be the remains of a flint core which has been utilised as a hammer stone. The core is mid grey in colour and exhibits several possible striking platforms around its surface, negative scars are prevalent and confirm its previous use. One side exhibits abrasion on its surface, and would indicate possible use as a hammer stone in its later life.

Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A large piece of light grey coloured flint with dark grey banding. This piece could have originated as a large core, but there are no clear indications of blade or tool removal from its surface, there are however some indications of preparation of striking platforms, but this cannot be confirmed. Some of the edges appear abraded as if used as a hammer stone, although the location of the abrasion marks would not be a good point for hammering other material. The flat base would offer a better striking surface.

County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Rectangular piece of mid to dark grey flint, with a small piece of non beach cortex on the left side of the distal edge. The dorsal face exhibits a single medial ridge running from the proximal to distal edge. The proximal edge appears broken or snapped off, the edge appears rounded but clean, not a recent break. The left and right margins are blade like in appearance although the right margin is more undulating as it proceeds toward the distal edge. Appears to be some slight breakage in the right side of the distal edge, could be recent. The ventral face is smooth in appearance, …

Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Cornwall
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Light grey in colour with a section of cortex remaining on the right margin, this piece of flint appears to be a from a beach pebble. There does not appear to be any retouch on the dorsal face, although the left margin is more than capable of being a flake blade. The dorsal surface is uneven in texture, with the distal and proximal edges appearing uneven and jagged. The ventral face appears smoother, with the cortex appearing more obvious on the left margin, some cortex now appearing on the proximal edge, there does not appear to be any indication of retouch on this face.

An elongated piece of mid grey flint with light grey inclusions in the body. There appears to be a piece of cortex remaining at the distal edge possible beach material ? The proximal edge terminates in a point, the body appears twisted round on itself and has been classified by the finder as a plunging flake, The piece appears plano convex in profile, with a prominent ridge at the distal end. The area around the cortex appears abraded. The ventral face is smooth in appearance with conchoidal ripples present throughout the face. A very small bulb of percussion appears to be presen…

A half moon shaped piece of brown to mid grey coloured flint with lighter inclusions. The distal face is smooth in appearance and slopes from the proximal edge down to the distal edge. The proximal edge is flat in appearance and higher than the other edges implying breakage in the past. The left margin appears to have been subject to abrupt retouch along its edge terminating at the distal edge which appears more blade like. The right margin and distal edges are narrow and sharp, and could be used as blades. The ventral face is uneven, no indication of any retouch around the edges.

Pear shaped piece of translucent brown coloured flint, with some cortex remaining on the dorsal face. The cortex is smooth to the touch and appears consistent with beach material. This appears to be a refresh flake from a core, which could have been utilised as a blade. The right margin is primarily cortex material although does possess a sharp edge, no indication of retouch. The proximal edge in an abraded or broken point and could have been the remains of a piercer point, although no evidence to substantiate this. The left margin is blade like, but appear broken along it edge …

Black coloured piece of flint, with cortex remaining in the dorsal face, the flint is half moon shaped in profile and appears to curve to the left. The cortex is predominantly on the medial running between the proximal and distal edges, rough in places would appear to be nodular material rather than normal beach.. Both the right and left margins appear to have been subjected to retouch, but are now exhibiting abrasions to their respective edges as if having been used to strike other material. The proximal and distal edges also exhibit similar features of being used as striking poin…

Circular piece of light grey coloured flint with 40% cortex remaining on the dorsal face. The cortex is smooth in texture and is consistent with material from local beaches. The only indication of retouch on this piece appears to be from the medial of the left margin to the medial of the distal edge, very gentle retouch has occurred along these areas producing a scraper blade. The remaining edges are uneven and jagged in places. The ventral face while smooth to the touch is uneven, a large and prominent bulb of percussion is present at the proximal edge, with some hint of conchoid…

Uneven piece of flint, light to mid grey in colour, appears to be a waste flake but does exhibit what appears to be some retouch, the distal edge has a protruding point on the left side which could be used as a piercer. The notch in the middle of the distal edge also implies possible usage as a graver. On the left margin their is a section of flint above the medial which protrude from the dorsal face which appears to have some serrations in the surface. The ventral face is smooth in texture and exhibits a large bulb of percussion, no strong indication of retouch on this surface.

Rectangular piece of light browny/grey flint with cream mottling on the ventral face, the dorsal face is uneven and jagged in appearance. Appears to be a core rejuvenation flake. The ventral face is smooth in appearance and texture, no bulb of percussion is present, nor any conchoidal ripples in the surface. There is a piece of cortex at the proximal edge, but difficult to discern if it is pebble or nodular material. NO obvious indication of retouch on any edges.

Evidence of blade removal from the material on both sides of the piece, while one striking platform is comprised of clean flint with a thin outer skin of cortex, the second platform is primarily cortex material and was probably the first of the two striking platforms to be made on this piece. Triangular shaped piece of orange coloured flint, very shiny in appearance and unusual. The dorsal face is smooth in appearance and texture with some conchoidal ripples present in the face. The left margin medial appears to have been subject to retouch, which has been smoothed out through possible usage. The proximal edge is concave in appearance and exhibits a higher edge. The right margin starts as a convex shape and then returns as concave , the convex part appears to be cortex material but could also be as a result of patination.
