A medieval "paperclip" rivet or folded rivet used to repair a sheet metal vessel. The rivet is made from a square sheet of copper alloy with two corners folded in and then up. The corners would have been pushed through the hole and then folded back on themselves. It is possible that this rivet was lost before it was used as the corners are not folded back. It has a smooth dark green patina. This type of rivet was used from the early Medieval to Post Medieval periods, but most date from 1450 - 1600 (Egan; Material Culture in London in an Age of Transition, page 101).

A base from a Roman ceramic vessel; probably a colour coated beaker dating from the later Roman period. Only the base of the vessel survives. It is narrow at just 40.97mm diameter. It tapers to 35.9mm at the narrowest point and then the walls flare. The fabric is white to light grey with a colour coating of dark grey on the outer face, and of grey with red tones on the inside. The breaks are fine with a smooth feel and the inclusions are mainly flecks of black and orange-red (perhaps grog). The vessel seems similar to Castor Ware (also known as Nene Valley Ware) narrow mouthed beakers…

A fragment of Medieval copper alloy vessel leg from a cooking vessel such as a cauldron. The leg is sub triangular in section; concave on the inner surface and having a strengthening decorative ridge running down the centre of the outer face. There is a mid rib on each face, flanking the central rib. The foot flares outwards. The leg is incomplete with a further fragment from the central ridge having broken away, and being broken at the top. The material is copper alloy and the object is cast and measures 58.44mm long, 48.34mm wide, 31.92mm thick and weighs 188.77g. The condition …

A sherd of a Medieval ceramic vessel. It is a rim sherd from a vessel with a rim diameter of about 10cm. The fabric is hard with an irregular texture. The inner face is banded in grey and pink buff and fades to tan buff on the outer face. There are numerous poorly sorted grit and quartz inclusions as well as possible slag and black iron ore. The rim is flat topped but with a small beaded moulding on the outer face. There is a patch of clear glaze on the outer face.

A sherd from a Medieval ceramic vessel. It is a wall sherd. The fabric is hard and has an irregular to laminated texture. The inner face is light grey, fading through cream to orange on the outer face. There are numerous poorly sorted grit and quartz inclusions giving the surfaces a pimply feel. The fabric seems similar to Coal Measures Orange fabrics.

A copper-alloy probable vessel mount of Roman date. The mount is circular in plan and has a very slight curvature. On the upper surface a combination of curved low ridges surrounded by recessed panels combine to form a five-pointed star pattern with a ring at the centre. The recesses contain corroded enamel insets of uncertain colour. There is a small scar on the upper edge which was probably a suspension loop. The object has a dark green patina caused by iron staining.
A parallel can be found at BH-F17DB7, where the recorder, Julian Watters, discusses the similarity to Early Med…

A cast copper alloy Medieval/ Post-Medieval (1200-1800) vessel leg, broken at both ends and along one side. The leg is flat on the reverse while the front is divided into three areas; a prominent central rib and two side areas of which one survives. This is thin near the rib and then thickens towards the outer edge. There are no apparent traces of blackening, which usually suggest a vessel's usage in cooking over an open fire. The large size of this vessel leg suggests it is from a large vessel such as a cauldron.
Crudely made cast copper alloy vessels were widely used from about 1…

A wall fragment from a large stoneware vessel dating from the early 19th century. The wall is about 15mm thick and is clearly from a large vessel. It is decorated with an applied royal coat of arms with traces of red glaze surviving on it. The crest allows the vessel to be dated to 1801 - 1837 AD because the arrangement of arms with a central escutcheon was adopted in 1801 and the escutcheon was removed on the ascension of Queen Victoria in 1837. Small parts of other applied decoration can be seen near the breaks on both sides of the crest. The vessel is made from a tan coloured stone…

A sherd from the shoulder of a medieval ceramic vessel, possibly from the Hallgate pottery, Doncaster, and similar to 'B' fabric. It probably dates from 1100 - 1300AD. The fabric is light brown and quite finely grained. There are a large number of black inclusions of varying sizes up to 4mm, and a smaller number of reddish inclusions of similar size that have the appearance of ferrous material. There is a simple decoration of horizontal combing above the shoulder of the vessel, consisting of two broad grooves flanking two narrower grooves. The sherd is 70.9mm long, 61mm wide and 10.7m…

A copper alloy fragment of a leg from a cooking vessel of Medieval or Post Medieval date. The leg is D-shaped in section and has a turned out foot which is damaged. There are traces of sooting on the leg, indicating it was used in a hearth. The breaks are patinated. Cast cooking vessels seem to have come into use in the second half of the 13th century and to have continued at least until c. 1600 (Geake 2001, Finds Recording Guide, page 52).
