Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Doncaster
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragmentary and miscast lead alloy probable token of probable Medieval date, with the casting flange and gate also surviving, though in two pieces. Only about a third of the token survives. It is flat and would have been circular when complete. It seems likely that it was mis cast and the rest of it was never formed. The token has a uniface design with a legend round the edge and a beaded border. Sadly, the motif and legend are no longer legible, though some letters can be picked out: a chevron barred A, a retrograde R and C, an O and an S. The large size of the token (probabl…

A Medieval uniface lead alloy token. The design appears to be an uneven cross with flared arms outlined with curved relief lines, filled with hatching. This may be intended to be mill sails which would make it a Powell type 22, or could be a petalled flower (type 1). The token has a well developed white patina and probably dates from 1200 - 1600. A similar example is illustrated on page 23 (number 2 on row 6) of Fletcher (2005) Leaden Tokens and Tallies.

A cast lead alloy probable spindle whorl, of probable Early Medieval date. It is conical in shape and has a circular, central perforation with a diameter of 6.8mm. It is undecorated, but there are some deep gouges across the walls. The base is slightly hollow. The whorl has a white patina. This shape can be classified as Coppergate type A1 which was used from the 6th century onwards.
