Object type: BRACELET
Broad period: ROMAN
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper-alloy bracelet of Roman date that has probably been re-used as a finger ring. Both terminals of the bracelet are missing. The breaks are patinated. The band is rectangular in section and tapers in plan. It has been bent into a curved shape, perhaps suggesting it was reused as a finger ring, though the finger ring is probably not complete. On the front face it has decoration comprising of a single, central longitudinal groove that runs the length of the object until it nears the tapered end. To either side of the central groove are opposing diagonal grooves. T…

A copper alloy incomplete Roman brooch of Hod Hill type dating from AD 43 - AD 70. Only the upper half of the brooch survives. The head is rolled forwards to form a housing for the axis bar (which is missing) and has a slot for the hinged pin (also missing). The top of the bow is decorated with a transverse moulded band. Object type: HARNESS PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A copper alloy Medieval pendant in the form of a bird, perhaps a hawk. The pendant is probably a harness pendant but is smaller than th other examples on the database. It has a broken suspension loop at the top, which also represents the bird's head. The bird is displayed with spread wings and tail, but unlike many of the eagle pendants recorded, the head is not turned to one side, nor is it double. The pendant is similar to but smaller than IOW-B5BDA3 which notes several references. GLO-C03D14 is another interesting parallel which records the use of a bird shaped pendant on an annula…

Object type: SEAL MATRIX
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast lead alloy seal matrix of Medieval date. It has no suspension loop or lug, and there are no apparent breaks. The edges are rounded and worn. The seal is pointed-oval in form, trapezoidal in section and with moulded decoration on the back face. This matrix is unusual in that it seems to have no trace of any legend or decorative motif on the front face, suggesting it may be a blank that has yet to be carved. The moulded design is of a plant with two leaves near the base, two possible flowers, one at each side, and three buds at the top. This design could also be …

Object type: MOUNT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An almost complete cast copper alloy mount of post-medieval date. The plate of the mount is heart-shaped and domed, with a concave reverse. Extending from the pointed end of the heart is an open-worked trefoil. The two side lobes are round with holes in the centre, while the central lobe is oval and solid. The front is otherwise undecorated. Projecting from the reverse of the heart are two spikes, one has broken off, while the second points inwards. These attachment spikes help to indicate a 16th or 17th Century date and it is likely that this mount was used as a horse harness …

An incomplete cast lead alloy possible Medieval or Post-Medieval brooch dating from about 1200 - 1500. The central motif is a foliate low relief design with nine points spreading up and outward (a palm?); there is a border around the central design with a ring-and-dot motif. The brooch has been damaged and there is a roughly crescent-shaped hole below the central design along the border; part of the material has been bent towards the back; the edges are also extremely worn. Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: North Lincolnshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An incomplete cast copper alloy late Medieval to Post-Medieval thimble dating from about 1450-1550. The thimble is damaged, bent out of shape and its dome is missing. The body has been decorated with a series of large punched triangular pits which have been arranged in five spiral tiers, beginning at the bottom edge of the object, creating a wide border as it spirals upward. Corrosion obscures any possible maker's mark at the start of the spiral. The material has a light-medium green patina. A similar example is SOM-231E57 which is thought to have been designed to be an open thimble o…

An incomplete unusual double walled copper alloy beehive thimble, probably dating from 1400-1500 AD. It is slightly squashed and there is extensive damage to the rim and one side. Originally it was dome shaped, with no division between crown and sides. Unusually, this thimble either has a double layered wall, or is in fact two thimbles which were stacked one inside the other when deposited. Two closely fitting layers of copper alloy are visible, very noticeably where the upper layer is missing. The punch holes covering the walls and top are small, round and erratically spaced. Th…

Part of a cast copper alloy early Anglo-Saxon brooch, probably a cruciform but perhaps a small-long brooch, dating from the 5th or 6th century. Only the lower bow and the top of the foot survives. The bow is arched with a flat back and has a moulding at the bottom creating faceted corners. The flat panel at the top of the foot is decorated with annulet punches making a border along the top and sides. The base is defined by a double incised line. Lappets project from this area. One is broken but the other is a tapering scroll, almost D-shaped overall, with a circular hole beneath the c…
