A group of 5 coins was recovered during the course of excavations at New Romney, Kent in December 2005. The coins were originally identified by Adrian Gollop of Canterbury Archaeology Trust and his listing has been used for this report and converted into the catalogue provided below. The find consists of three groats (the fourpenny coin), a half-groat and a penny, giving a total of 1s. 3d., a sum equivalent to something like £20 or £30 in modern terms.
These coins come from one, very unusual period of English monetary history, the time of the Great Debasement. The English silve…

All four are silver pennies of King Edward I, as listed below.
Pennies of Edward I
1. Class 3e (c. June 1280 to c. Dec 1281) Newcastle mint 1.24g
2. Class 4b (1282-90) London mint 1.40g
3. Class 9bi (1299 to late 1300/early 1301) London mint 1.45g
4. Class 9bi London mint 1.44g
As official English issues of the period, these coins will be of the traditional sterling standard, i.e. 92/5% fine metal. They would certainly have been in circulation together and are in good condition and very good weight, particularly the latest coins present (nos 3-4), which h…

Surface metal analysis conducted at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the brooch of 97%; it weighs 1.35grams.
The fragment consists of the rectangular head-plate and part of the bow of an Early Medieval miniature bow brooch, of which the original form is uncertain in view of the absence of the foot-plate; length: 13 mm surviving; width: 8 mm. The head-plate has a roughly beaded edge round a collet enclosing a rectangular garnet mounted on a grid-patterned foil; on the back is a broken lug for hinging a pin.
The miniature form and shape of the head-pl…

Dress-pin with bent and broken shaft, and conical head.
From the photo, it appears that the head is decorated with radiating lines, possibly beaded. Although it was originally undated, the decoration suggests a Roman date; compare BH-82A289, HAMP-904A96, LIN-47B5D5, BH-326846, etc.

A medieval silver-gilt stirrup-shaped finger-ring (the gilding now worn). The ornate bezel consists of a single, central knop beneath which four further knops form a quatrelobe. Romano-British silver finger ring, with broad carinated shoulders and a raised sub-rectangular bezel which is too worn to determine if it was originally decorated. The shoulders have three converging incised lines. There is a clear scarf join at the bottom of the hoop. The whole ring is very worn, especially around the inside of the hoop, which implies that it was in heavy use before loss or discard.

Object type: PENDANT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Kent
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A medieval silver-gilt coin pendant made from a penny from the reign of Edward I (class 4b), minted at Canterbury between 1282-9. The practice of converting coins to items of jewellery such as brooches or pendants was quite widespread and is usually considered to be done close to the period of coin production. This pendant has received the additional decoration of five shallow collets (much abraded), possibly to contain coloured glass. Each of these are placed at the end of the arms of the cross and at its centre. The cross is exploited for its decorative potential and significantly, …

Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL

Silver hooked tag of sub-triangular form with two attachment holes, the decoration on the plate originally inlaid with niello, and the upper right-hand corner broken away. The decoration consists of a lobed and scrolled foliate design around a central 'V'-shaped motif, with a lightly ribbed border on the two longer sides. The back is plain. Discussion: The hooked tag is a typical example of a well-known class of later 8th- and 9th-century allpurpose fastening used to secure clothing (including gartering), and purses and small bags. The lobed leaf and pendant scrolls of this piece reca…
