Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy pan weight of probable medieval date. The weight is circular and flat with slightly rounded sides. The upper face is decorated with three raised concentric circles around. Biggs and Withers (2000, 25) catalogue several similar weights decorated with concentric circles which mostly cluster around two ounces in weight. This weight is closer to half an ounce, giving a 5% loss in weight through wear and losses; the edge and base are quite abraded and have suffered losses. The authors suggest these types may be medieval in date although it is hard to be certain as such …

A cast lead weight formed of two joined flattened spheres; a narrowed waist is at the centre of the object. The object has no obvious means of attachment. It is corroded and dented in a number of places. Due to its undiagnostic nature a wide date range is offered.

A corroded circular cast lead weight with ten ridges radiating from a central loop. In the centre of the weight is a suspension loop which is bent slightly to one side. The sides are slightly bevelled to a slightly larger base. In the centre of the base is a small depression. A smaller weight, but with similar decoration can be found illustrated in Biggs and Withers (2000, 23; ref. 32). Their simplicity of design means that they are difficult to date (ibid., 21), but a medieval dating is plausible in this case.

A large, worn and corroded lead-alloy vessel repair, with fragments of the pottery surviving. The mend is irregularly shaped, broadly sub-triangular, with a linear notch around the sides and pieces of red-brown pottery still attached. These types of mend were used within both the Roman and medieval periods and the extant pottery is not diagnostic.

A large, corroded lead-alloy vessel repair, with fragments of the pottery surviving. The mend is irregularly shaped, broadly oval, with a bumpy surface. It has a linear notch around the sides and pieces of light-pink pottery still attached. These types of mend were used within both the Roman and medieval periods and the extant pottery is not diagnostic, although finds made in the vicinity would make a Roman date likely.

A rim sherd from a later Iron Age coarseware jar dating from approximately 300 BC - AD 100. The jar has a slightly outward turned rim with a flat top and rounded outer edge. Below the short rim the body curved outwards at c.45 degrees. Not enough of the rim remains to estimate the diameter as it is slightly irregular but it indicates a large vessel. The relatively hard fired fabric is only slightly scratched by a finger nail and has a mid-brown core and a dark-brown to black surface with burnishing on the outer side and rim. The fabric has abundant (c.25%) angular flint temper of c. 2…

A gold, short length of octagonal-sectioned rod (Length 19mm; diameter 9mm; weight 17g.), broken at each end. While ornaments made from octagonal-sectioned rod are known in the Bronze Age, there is insufficient evidence to place this piece chronologically or culturally. This object was reported as possible Treasure under the Treasure Act 1996, and subsequently declared not to be treasure.

A fragment of Roman tile with combed decoration on one surface. The fragment is an irregular five-sided shape with two probable original edges present. The combing creates a four trench border, worn towards the edge, with a further group of six ridges at a diagonal angle to it internally. The uncombed side has a slightly raised lip which traces the outer edge along two sides. The tile is an oxidized orange colour.

A cast copper-alloy medieval strap-slide with a central integral external rivet. The frame is trapezoidal in shape with an expanded outer edge. The artefact is flat on both upper and lower faces and is seemingly plain. A similar example can be found illustrated in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 232; ref. 1239). Many such trapezoidal examples have been found in 14th-century contexts. This piece is dark grey in colour with traces of off-white corrosion product.

A complete cast copper-alloy post-medieval sword-belt fitting. It consists of a sub-rectangular plate, from one end of which protrudes a hook. The shortest edge (20.05mm) features the hook in its centre; the edge incurves slightly on both sides towards the hook, which curves round forwards in relation to the upper (decorated) surface of the plate. The hook itself extends for 23.3mm. It has an oval cross-section and is slightly thickened at its tip. The plate is flat and features moulded decoration on its upper surface. A corroded cast copper-alloy hooked mount of post-medieval date. The mount is sub-trapezoidal in plan with an incurved (U-shaped) upper edge. It tapers towards the inward-turning hook, now slightly misaligned. The mount is shallowly convex. It features two, unaligned rivet holes, one towards the upper edge, the other just below the centre of the plate. These both retain the corroded remains of iron rivets. The copper alloy is covered in mid-/light-green corrosion product. Comparable hooked mounts can be found illustrated in Margeson (1993, 39; refs.: 257, 258) where they are dated t…

A complete cast copper-alloy 13th- or 14th-century medieval bar-mount with pendent loop. The upper surface of the bar mount is rectangular in plan and cross-section. It is looped round at the base, and narrows, terminating in a short, squared off stop which is joined to the front section of bar (and, originally, through the belt) by a single copper-alloy rivet which survives in situ. There is a separate rivet at the other end of the bar mount. The pendant sits within the loop at the bottom of the bar and is quadrilobate in form. A corroded and bent cast copper-alloy artefact: probably one of the external plates from a three-piece composite medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end (c. 14th centuy AD). The object is sub-rectangular in shape with a broken terminal, the section above folded round on itself. At the opposite (attachment) end there is a main central perforation extending to the edge; the tab to one side of this has also been lost. Object type: STEELYARD WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A corroded and slight damaged cast lead Roman steelyard weight with a broken and rusted iron loop at one apex. It is biconical in shape, as typical Roman steelyard weights were (Geake 2001, 67), with the loop at the apex for suspension. At 164g this steelyard weight is equivalent to about 6 ounces or half a pound in the Roman weight system (a semis) although this weight may have varied from the original through corrosion and loss of the suspension loop and possibly attached chain.
