Tiny copper alloy vessel with rounded base and circular opening. Base is 27mm diameter and opening is 12mm diameter. There is a slight rim marked round the opening. There are broken luggs on each side showing it had looped handles. The object has surface corrosion but is generally well preserved. It has been coated with wax by the finder for preservation.

Copper alloy decorative fitting of Roman date. It is a fairly flat plate with a rectangular hole in the centre and knobs on each corner and triangular projections on each side. The projections are decorated with impressed circles with dots in the centre. There is a raised lip around the central hole. The back is fairly flat and even but there is a shallow circular hollow on one side which may have fit into a stud. A similar, but 'fancier' mount SOMDOR-D208C5 is noteworthy. In this mount which may have been a lock plate, the opening is not at all diagnostic - it is neither the di…

Copper alloy piece in the form of a scorpion. One of the pincers has been lost and the end of the tail as well as some legs. The body is marked with scales. A copper alloy sub-triangular handle with attachment presumably for attaching to the rest of the object. Handle is not cast but made from a bent piece of metal. The handle is likely from a chafing dish. Chafing dish handles were domestic utensils and would be used to cook food or keep it hot at the table.

Object type: BUCKLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Isle of Anglesey
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast copper alloy decorated buckle. Dark grey with frequent pale green patches of corrosion. It is a single loop frame, 'D' shaped with integral strap bar. There is a slight thickening midway along the strap bar which may suggest it also had an integral pin which has broken off. The front of the buckle is decorated with ropework. The object is quite badly decayed and needs conservation. Discussion: Very similar to No.122 in Whitehead (2003) p.25, this was dated 1450-1550.

Bun shaped lead weight. Light creamy grey colour with extensive patches of a mid-brown patina. Very badly decayed. The bottom and top are both flat but the bottom is particularly so; the sides are rounded and converge slightly towards the top. There is what appears to be the stub of an iron pin located in the centre of the top surface. Discussion: Probably a steelyard weight indicated by the iron stub which is probably the suspension point for attachment to the steelyard arm. The fact that the bottom of the weight is very flat may suggest that it doubled also as a standing weight…

Composite copper alloy and iron mount. The mount consists of two square copper alloy plates, one fixed to a heavy knop or button, and one loose. The loose copper alloy plate is attached to the fixed plate by two small nails which protrude significantly. One corner of the fixed plate extends into the centre of the button. The button comprises two copper alloy discs, one on each exterior face, sandwiching what appears to be iron in the middle. It is possible that the loose plate may have originally been attached to one of the exterior copper discs on the button. In the space between …

Half of a stone mortar. The stone appears to be a hard, buff coloured gritstone (a metamorphosed sandstone), and probably not sourced locally as the local gritstone often used for this purpose is a conglomerate and generally much coarser. The original intact object would have been circular in plan with convex external sides finishing at a distinctive lip at the base. The external surfaces are all rough though quite regular in shape. The inside of the mortar is a steep concave bowl shape, it is smooth by comparison to the outside surfaces: the result of the action of a pestle grinding …

A sub-triangular, barbed and tanged flint arrowhead. The arrowhead is quite crude in form. It is manufactured from a mainly opaque mid greenish brown flint but with a band of white around the point, and the tip of the point is translucent orange. The extreme tip of the point appears to have broken off in antiquity. One face of the arrowhead is very slightly concave, the other is very slightly convex. There are two large patches of cortex surviving on both faces of the object. In plan, the two side edges are slightly curvilinear giving the point a narrow and extended appearance. The e…

Description: (I am grateful to John Llywelyn Williams for the following description & discussion) The find comprises two fragments of a copper alloy flat axe. The larger blade fragment was initially thought to be all that survived. This fragment represents the lower half of the axe which has been severed from the butt end at a slight angle. The surface is of a generally uniform mid-brown colour with significant patches of green mottling signifying active corrosion. The fragment is slightly asymmetric in plan with one side gently concave and the other side continuing in a str…

There are several small splits in the rim and a hole on the obverse side that does not penetrate the flan completely. Cast late Bronze Age copper alloy miniature socketed axe. The object is covered in a pale yellowish green patina with patches of dark grey probably representing the dark silts in which it was found.
