Object type: UNIDENTIFIED OBJECT
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A cast copper-alloy unidentified object of a known type usually referred to as 'moustache-like' or 'moustache shaped'. These objects are thought to date from the Middle Bronze Age to the Late Iron Age, after the discovery of one in the Salisbury Hoard (Stead, 1998, no.117) and various other finds reported to the PAS which are associated with Middle Bronze Age material. The object is a hollow three-dimensional pointed oval with a bulbous upper portion. It is decorated with a series of shallow longitudinal grooves which run down the exterior of the bulbous or bowl-shaped part of the ite…

A worn and complete cast copper-alloy crotal bell of Post Medieval date, c. 16th-17th century AD. The bell is sub-spherical and comprises two hemispherical domes with a raised circumferential join. The top hemisphere has two circular sound holes and a sub-rectangular suspension loop with drilled circular hole. The hole was drilled later into the solid cast loop suggesting it was made before the introduction of the detachable 'sprue-piece' method in the mid-17th century. The lower hemisphere has a long sound slit with circular holes at each end. Both hemispheres are decorated with the …

A worn cast copper alloy Post Medieval animal rumbler or 'crotal' bell, dating to between 1600-1850 AD. The bell is spherical in shape and is comprised of two slightly mis-matched hemispherical domes with a raised join around its circumference. The upper hemisphere has two circular sound holes and has a large sub-rectangular suspension loop projecting from the top with an irregularly drilled half-oval suspension loop hole. The lower hemisphere has a long sound slit and an illegible makers' mark is visible on both sides of the slit. The remains of a probably copper-alloy pea are intact…

A late Medieval to early Post Medieval sheet metal rumbler bell, probably for use on an animal, c. AD 1350-1550. The bell is made from two sheet metal hemispheres soldered together, and a separate flat-sectioned loop, fixed on the inside of the bell. The bell has suffered significant damage to its lower hemisphere and sound slit, resulting in the loss of the pea. The upper hemisphere and loop are intact, but the body of the bell is crushed from where the bell has been broken. For a similar example recorded onto the PAS database, cf.: SUR-2601D2. The bell measures 35.49 mm high, 29.8…

A nearly complete Post Medieval cast copper-alloy animal rumbler or 'crotal' bell. 'HW' makers mark, of Williams Seller's unnamed foreman in York, dating this bell to c. 1683-1687. The bell consists of an integrally cast suspension loop with circular hole running parallel to the sound slit below. The upper hemisphere of the bell has two circular sound holes and is decorated in a 'sunburst' pattern'; the lower hemisphere is decorated in a fishscale pattern, with an elongated sound slit and attached large circular sound holes (one broken slightly). One-half of a cast copper-alloy Post Medieval stock clasp, consisting of the 'female' or fitting half of the two-piece object, dating from the c. 18th-early 19th century AD. The clasp half consists of a trapezoidal plate with a wider ornate outer edge, which tapers symmetrically to a narrower straight-edge; the straight-edge would have connected to the other half of the clasp. Down the centre of the plate, three equally-spaced and equally-sized rectangular apertures are positioned, just above the outer straight-edge and terminating just below the thicker outer decorative edge and in…

Object type: HARNESS FITTING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A late Medieval to Post Medieval three-piece harness fitting consisting of a bar mount, a suspension loop and a split pin, probably dating from c. AD 1300-1700. The bar mount consists of a rectangular plate from which a narrow rectangular strip projects from the bottom and is bent toward the back surface terminating in a lozenge-shaped end, which has a circular rivet hole in its centre. This terminal is held in place by means of an integrally-cast cylindrical mount shaft and these elements fitted together would have held the fitting to a strap. A simple circular ring is attached to th…

An incomplete Post Medieval cast copper alloy sword belt hanger consisting of a portion of the metal plate and two fragments of hooked mounts, c. 16th century AD. The hanger plate is generally flat in cross-section, although slightly curved in profile to fit the shape of the sword belt. The remaining end is trifoliate with a circular rivet hole in the middle knop; a symmetrically-positioned trifoliate end is missing from old breaks on the opposite side. The end-rivet from the remaining end is now missing, but the high degree of iron staining suggests that these rivets were composed of…

An incomplete Medieval to Post Medieval cast copper-alloy double loop oval buckle, dating to c. AD 1350-1650. The remains of the buckle consists of the frame; the pin is missing. There is no decoration visible and the reverse has bevelled inner edges to the loops and is undecorated. The buckle frame has been bent, probably from in situ damage, making both loops raise upwards. Cf. Whitehead 2003, p. 53.

Object type: POWDER MEASURE
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: West Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Post Medieval lead alloy powder flask cap or measure, probably dating to the 17th century. The object is cup-like in appearance with an open end. No loops remain at the base which would have fastened to the bandolier (belt) with a cord. The overall shape of this cap is now flattened causing some damage to the surface. The object is of a mottled white and dark grey colouration. It measures 17.6 mm high, with an uneven 1.2-1.7 mm wall thickness and it weighs 13.37 grams.
The flask itself would have contained enough explosive for a complete charge for the weapon. A series of these h…

A flint knapped end scraper combing with it a Denticulate and a possible serrated edge, probably dating from the later Mesolithic to Neolithic period, c. 7000-2351 BC. The scraper has been semi-abruptly retouched on its distal end; the blade upon which the scraper was created has broken near to its proximal end with a rolled hinge fracture suggesting perhaps that this break was purposeful to remove the platform and bulb of percussion. Light conchoidal ripples are present on the ventral face and the dorsal face has a strong middle rib with some further micro-removals visible on the dor…

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Roman zoomorphic figurine of a goat, dating from c. AD 43-410. The figurine is moulded in the round and consists of the animal's head with horns, ears and muzzle still visible, followed by a thick neck and chest, short torso and rump with the remains of its snubbed tail; all four legs are intact but incomplete and it is likely that this figurine's feet were once affixed to a flat plinth or platform, now missing along with the lower part of the animal's legs and hooves. The entire surface of the animal has been worn, probably from in situ damage, but it …

An illegible and clipped silver long cross penny of later Medieval issue, probably issued by either Henry VI or Edward IV, dating from AD 1422-1483. Both legends are illegible, but the quatrefoil in the centre of the reverse cross confirms that the coin's mint is of York.
It is likely that this coin was of Episcopal issue either Sede Vacante or by Archbishop George Neville on behalf of Edward IV (Second reign, AD 1471-1483) due to remaining detail. There is a cinquefoil rose by the obverse bust's head or crown on the left, which does not match with any option listed by North (1991 …
