It is likely that the object is incomplete and so would have been circular with a central perforation. There is stamped lettering visible and it reads DURHAM beneath a possible crown and on the opposite side, No. 9.

There is a central perforation which shows signs of wear suggesting suspension perhaps due to use as a loom weight or spindle whorl. Weights of this type are commonly used from the Roman period through to the Post medieval period.

There does not appear to be any decoration on the object although there are a series of incised lines on the surface of the object. A lead conical weight. The object is conical in shape with a circular base with a diameter of 26.77 mm. The object is 35.61 mm in height and tapers towards the top before rounding. The sides of the object are undecorated although there are some cut marks. On the flat base of the object, there is a central crude ring and dot motif and a series of later linear cut marks.

In the centre of the border is a single lis in relief. The back of the weight is flat and undecorated. A complete copper alloy trade weight of post medieval date, c. AD 1625 to 1685. The object is circular in plan with a 4.09 mm wide lip around the edge. There are three marks on the surface of the object, inside the lip. They are a dagger, a ewer and the letter C with a crown above. The crowned C refers to either Charles I or II and the a sword, which represents the sword of St. Paul and is the mark of the City of London and the ewer, the Founders Company of London mark, which shows they have verified this weight. On one side There are five rectangular impressions which are irregularly spaced around the edge. The back of the object is flat and undecorated. There is a central, circular perforation through the object which would have been used for suspension. Both surfaces are flat and undecoratied and the object is a pale grey colour. Objects of this type are dated from the Roman to the Medieval periods and change very little due to their functional nature. There are similar examples on the PAS database including HESH-277B38.
