Incomplete post-Medieval gold posy ring with significant damage, now in the form of a strip rather than hoop of metal. The band is of shallow d-shaped profile. The ring appears to have been cut at the point of commencement of the inscription, which is subsequently intact. This reads – in Italic script – Let loue. Last (where the L of let takes an extended form and last is written with a long or medial s). There is no mark, and no other obviously diagnostic evidence. Discussion: The text ‘Let love last’ has not yet been found, but several examples of the sentiment

Distorted gold finger ring in the form of a plain hoop which is D-shaped in section. The shoulders of the hoop each have four incisions to form three collars on either side of the bezel. The bezel is missing its original setting and is in a form which was probably originally rectangular but has now been distorted. The walls of the cell have been flattened at one side. There are general marks of damage throughout. The lack of diagnostic information on this ring makes dating it difficult. No exact parallels have been found on the PAS database nor in the British Museum's collection, …

A silver quatrefoil dress hook. The front plate is divided into four quadrants by a central cross, the arms of which are 45 degrees from vertical. At the centre of the cross protrudes a small hollow annulet. Each quadrant contains a slightly larger annulet. The border of the plate broadly follows their circumferences, and then pinches in towards the centre at the apex of each arm of the cross. The overall effect, when viewed from above, is of a stylised four-petal flower. The front place is covered in gilding, which has worn away in a few places. A separate, circular-sectioned si…

I have examined three coins reported found in the Great Dunmow area, Essex. The coins are all gold quarter-nobles of King Edward III and will therefore be over 23 carats fine, or about 96% good gold. The quarter-noble was the smallest of the three gold denominations of later medieval English currency, worth 1s.8d. (20-pence), so three were worth 60-pence, or five shillings. Their details are as follows: Edward III Third Coinage, second issue (1346-51) Quarter-noble North 1112 2.10g (JL) Quarter-noble North 1112 …
