A gold medieval ring brooch of thirteenth-century date. The brooch is annular-shaped with two raised collets, both of which are set with pink gemstones identified by raman spectroscopy as almandine garnets. The pin has a collar and rests against a small foliate quatrefoil at the opposite end. The face of the brooch is bifaceted and inscribed with Lombardic characters: + IESVI ICIE NILV DAMI. The modern French might be: Je suis ici in lieu d'ami which can be translated as 'I am here in place of a friend'. The reverse of the brooch is plain. Lightbown cites a different type of broo…

Simple one piece-brooch, Nauheim-derivative type with a flat broadly ovoid bow, undecorated, made of sheet metal, which narrows to a wire that forms a simple loop and the pin, both of circular cross-section. The catchplate is missing. Discussion: the brooch is so small it seems unlikely to have had much practical use, suggesting it was produced for symbolic reasons. For discussion of brooches of this type see Bayley & Butcher 2004, 146-8. For a parallel, see Hattatt 1987, no. 737. Date: late first century BC to early first century AD Wt.: 1.42g L.: 26.2mm W.: 6.6mm …

A Post-Medieval, silver annular brooch or buckle with detached brooch pin, now in three pieces. The main body of the brooch forms an irregular circle in plan and is subrectangular in section, with a slightly concave underside. The underside of the main body carries the makers mark OG, close to the narrowed point on the rim where the pin would have attached. The silver has crystallised and become brittle, as displayed in the three fragments of the brooch pin, which is missing its terminal and whose attachment loop is broken in two pieces. Dimensions: 1. Main body of brooch, Diame…

Description: The brooch, which has lost its pin, is formed by a penannular ring of circular section; diameter, 20 mm. The backs of the terminals, which slightly overlap due to compression, are plain and flat. The top and sides of the hoop are decorated towards the terminals with zones of transverse ribbing. Analysis: Surface metal analysis conducted by the Depart…

A medieval silver-gilt annular brooch, the ring decorated with a raised filigree design. The back of the brooch is formed from a separate section, or plate, into which the decorated filigree section has been set. The pin survives, and is attached through a space in the design of the filigree and through a hole pierced through the back plate. The brooch is slightly distorted. A similar brooch was discovered in 2004 at Firle, East Sussex (Treasure Report 2004, 148).

A late medieval silver-gilt ring, probably an annular brooch or buckle frame. The frame has a flattened, hexagonal-oval cross section with chamfered interior and exterior surfaces. The width of the section is slightly diminished in two opposing areas, suggesting wear from a pin, which is now missing; there is no constriction for the pin. The object has a dark grey patina with visible traces of gilding. Measurements: Internal diameter 18.56mm; external diameter 23.55mm. Similar copper alloy rings of 14-15th century date can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 2002.

A Medieval brooch, consisting of a hoop of twisted wire. The pin is missing, but a small part of the pin attachment survives. Simple brooches of twisted wire survive in reasonably large numbers from the Middle Ages. They exist in a variety of sizes from miniature to large. This example falls into the mid-range of known sizes. The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the thirteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.
