Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Leicestershire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Silver seal-die, oval matrix engraved with bust of a woman with hat, necklace and hair worn in bunches; exposed shoulders. Fluted handle with integral suspension loop, worn. The seal-die is hard to date; the handle suggests a late 17th Century date but this is tentative and it may be of later manufacture. Since the dating is uncertain it is not possible to definitely classify this as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

Surface metal analysis undertaken at the British Museum indicated an approximate silver content for the lump of 96%, with copper and trace levels of gold and lead. The find consists of an irregular lump of melted silver with pitted and abraded surfaces. It is possibly metal-working debris, but it has no recorded archaeological context. Examination under magnification did not reveal any features to indicate that the metal had been melted down from any recognisable object type. The metal composition could have originated at any period between the Roman period throu…

A Medieval brooch, consisting of a hoop of twisted wire. The pin is missing, but a small part of the pin attachment survives. Simple brooches of twisted wire survive in reasonably large numbers from the Middle Ages. They exist in a variety of sizes from miniature to large. This example falls into the mid-range of known sizes. The brooch is silver-gilt and dates from the thirteenth century. Consequently, in terms of age and as the object contains a minimum of 10% precious metal it qualifies as Treasure under the stipulations of the Treasure Act 1996.

A late medieval silver-gilt ring, probably an annular brooch or buckle frame. The frame has a flattened, hexagonal-oval cross section with chamfered interior and exterior surfaces. The width of the section is slightly diminished in two opposing areas, suggesting wear from a pin, which is now missing; there is no constriction for the pin. The object has a dark grey patina with visible traces of gilding. Measurements: Internal diameter 18.56mm; external diameter 23.55mm. Similar copper alloy rings of 14-15th century date can be seen in Egan and Pritchard 2002.

The object represents the missing handle from the late 17th century seal matrix previously found on the site by Mr Barlow (Treasure case 2005 T16, Treasure Annual Report 2005-6, Item 806). An examination of the two parts shows that they join perfectly along a hackly fracture line leaving no doubt that they are parts of the same silver matrix.

A medieval silver-gilt annular brooch, the ring decorated with a raised filigree design. The back of the brooch is formed from a separate section, or plate, into which the decorated filigree section has been set. The pin survives, and is attached through a space in the design of the filigree and through a hole pierced through the back plate. The brooch is slightly distorted. A similar brooch was discovered in 2004 at Firle, East Sussex (Treasure Report 2004, 148).

Circumstances of Find Found by Messrs D. Philips and B. Plason with the aid of a metal detector about 70cm below the field surface, 1.12.06. The initial discovery of the coins was made in and around the remains of their plough damaged pottery container. A small excavation was then made by the Herts. and Beds. FLO, Julian Watters. This excavation yielded more coins and pottery. Watters concluded that the coins had been deposited on the same spot as a Roman rubbish pit or midden; however, due to the fact that the find had already been removed prior to investigation a stratigraphica…
