A silver signet finger-ring. The hoop expands to form a heart-shaped bezel. The face of the bezel is lightly etched with the initials "WRC" in faux-Gothic characters running from the upper-left to the lower right; the letters are made from minute hatches. Small flourishes of hatching lend a decorative, floral effect. Opposite the bezel, the hoop is flattened, perhaps intentionally.

A rolled-up strip of gold of probable Chalcolithic or Bronze Age date (c. 2500-800 BC). The strip of gold is sub-rectangular in plan, and is rolled up (width ways), forming a tight roll which has been slightly squashed into an oval shape (when viewed from the side). Eleven folds can be counted from the middle. There is some soil still attached to and within these folds. The strip is very thin (less than a diameter). The strip is wider in the middle than near the end, where it tapers from c. 21 mm in the middle towards 15 mm at the end (the end hidden in the folds in the centre of the …

A medieval silver-gilt iconographic ring. The bezel is engraved with the figure of a female saint, probably St Barbara, holding a tower in her left hand and possibly a palm branch in her right. The hoop and shoulders are wreathed, forming a ridge along each shoulder. The facetted shoulders are engraved with flowers and leaves, which may originally have been enamelled. The gilding survives inside the hoop and in the recessed areas outside the hoop and on the bezel.
The ring dates to the 15th century.
Dimensions: height 24 mm, width 21 mm, width of bezel 7 mm.

A fragment of a silver-gilt Post-Medieval whistle. The spherical sounding-chamber is all that has survived. It is comprised of two hemispheres with turned edges, which have been soldered together to form a hollow globe. At one side is a hole and there is damage and loss of the silver-gilt where the pipe would have been attached.
Although a fragment, it shows similarities with boatswains' whistles. See for example DOR-243912, BERK-E24712 and DOR-6E2574.
The whistle fragment is Post-Medieval and dates from the sixteenth to seventeenth century.

I have examined three coins reported found in the Great Dunmow area, Essex. The coins are all gold quarter-nobles of King Edward III and will therefore be over 23 carats fine, or about 96% good gold. The quarter-noble was the smallest of the three gold denominations of later medieval English currency, worth 1s.8d. (20-pence), so three were worth 60-pence, or five shillings. Their details are as follows:
Edward III
Third Coinage, second issue (1346-51)
Quarter-noble North 1112 2.10g (JL)

Iron Age gold quarter stater. Eastern series (attributed to the Trinovantes), c. 80-50 BC. ABC (Cottam et al 2010) 2356; VA (Van Arsdell 1989) 1460-1. The reverse is a variant of the published type with a small spikey motif in the angle of the cross, replacing the common arcs. The central pellet is also replaced by a ring. John Sills has suggested that this is the second example struck from these dies - see CCI 01.0056 (SNC October 2007, no. HS3112).

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Essex
Workflow stage: Published
A gold, medieval finger-ring, the hoop decorated with a series of letter S's juxtaposed with knots, a continuous band running between them. The background is heavily grooved, while the border is left plain. The diminutive size of the ring suggests that it was designed either for a child or a young woman. It measures 16mm in diameter.
The ring dates from the fifteenth century and examination at the British Museum has established the gold content to be in excess of ten per cent of its weight.

A silver whistle. The whistle is formed of a sheet of silver with one domed end and one flattened, open end. The domed end appears to be formed of a separate piece of silver and attached to the end. The body narrows in width the open end which has a 'D' shaped aperture. Roughly in the centre of the upper surface of the whistle is a 'D' shaped open hole, forming the sound hole. A soldering scar is visible on the underside, from which a loop would have been attached.
Dimensions: 30.8mm in length, 7.0mm in width, 3.6mm in thickness at the open end and weighs 2.44g.
