A complete copper alloy double looped buckle, with zoomorphic decoration, of probable Late Medieval to Early Post Medieval dating (AD 1500 to AD 1650). The buckle consists of a double oval looped buckle (spectacle), with moulded transverse ridges on the frame as decoration. Projecting from one outer edge is a zoomorphic head. The head is triangular in shape, with pointed oval shaped eyes, and appears to be representing a bird's head. Part of the sheet copper alloy buckle plate is still present wrapped around the central bar. Iron corrosion products (from an iron pin) cover the buckl…

Approximately 25% of the buckle frame is present and consists of the upper half of the external edge of the frame. It is broadly D shaped in cross section. There appears to be an U shaped slot present, presumably the pin rest. The external edge is angled, with traces of gilding visible. The buckle frame fragment measures 22.35mm in length, 17.84mm in width, and 3.50mm thick. It weighs 1.9 grams. A buckle frame of a similar style …

A cast copper alloy single looped D shaped buckle of medieval date (c.1350 to 1450 AD). The buckle frame is broadly D shaped in plan, with a broad D shape cross section. At the centre of the frame, a single angular pointed projection with a U shaped notch as pin rest is present. The strap bar is off set. The pin and buckle plate are missing, presumably lost in antiquity. The buckle frame is a mid green colour with an even but slightly abraded patina covering all surfaces. Gilded copper-alloy buckle plate. The central part is rectangular, with two folded-under hinge loops along one long edge, both now broken (old breaks). Slightly more of one hinge loop is missing than the other. A narrow waist in the centre of the other long edge separates the central part from a terminal. This is symmmetrical, with each half consisting of a subrectangular centre with crescentic end projections; the effect is that of a cow-horn or moustache shape. The upper surface is decorated with a series of engraved diagonal lines converging on the waist of the buckle plate. Rows…
