An incomplete cast copper alloy Colchester derivative Polden Hill (flat wing ends type, Western Group), cf. Mackreth 2011, 5.a2. Plate 49) brooch, of Roman dating (80-120 AD). Approximately 50% of the brooch is present consisting of the bow, parts of the wings and the spring casing. The pin, spring, foot and catch plate are missing. In plan, the brooch is almost T-shaped, and D-shaped in cross section. The bow head is hump-like, and angular (comma shaped) in profile, with cylindral wings projecting from either side at the top. A complete cast copper alloy double loop oval buckle frame, of late Medieval dating (c.1400 to 1600 AD). The buckle frame consists of a double looped oval buckle frame, with bevelled edges to the frame. The pin and strap plate are not present. The edges of the buckle frame are raised higher than the central bar. The buckle is a mid dark green to brown, with an uneven surface patina. Abrasion has resulted in the loss of surface detail and patina from the edges and flat surfaces. The buckle frame measures 23.77mm in length, 19.70mm wide and 2.32mm thick. It weighs 2.3 grams. …

Approximately a quarter of the device survives, and consists of several letters of the inscription running clockwise around the edge of the device, surrounding the central design. The casting waste fragment consists of a sub rectangular sheet, with uneven, almost bubbly surfaces. It is sub rectangular in cross section. Two edges are smooth and unabraded, indicative of a fairly recent break. It is a mid grey colour, with a couple of areas which display a distinctive shiny sheer to it.
