A flake of secondary debitage, probably of Early Neolithic dating (c. 4000 BC - c. 2500 BC). The flake is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. The ventral (upper) surface demonstrates several longitudinal flake scars, along with a couple of lateral ones. Less than 50% of the ventral (upper) surface is covered in cortex (outer rind) indicating that is a debitage flake from the secondary phase of working. The dorsal (lower) surface exhibits a couple of transverse controlled flake scars near the top of the flake. Several uncontrolled fractures a…

A flake of tertiary debitage, dating from the Middle to Late Neolithic (c. 3000 BC - c. 2200 BC). The flake is sub oval in plan and oval in cross section. The ventral surface displays a couple of deliberately flake scars, and there is probable deliberate retouch around the edge. The flint is of a poor quality with several flaws, which resulted in hinge fracturing. Uncontrolled fractures due to plough roll and movement in the soil has meant that the controlled flake scars are hard to determine. The flake is a light grey to white colour, with orange spots. The opaque surface…

Two (2) secondary debitage flakes and seven (7) tertiary debitage flakes, probably dating from the Late Neolithic to the Early Bronze Age (2900 BC - 1800 BC). The flakes vary in size and are all irregular in plan and profile. There is no evidence of reworking or secondary flaking present. They are the residue left over from tool production and direct evidence of flint working either on the site or in the locality. All the flakes demonstrate signs of abrasion, with uncontrolled flint scars present, from plough roll whilst in the plough soil. The secondary debitage flakes to…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Warwickshire

A tertiary debitage flake with retouch around the edges, to form an ovate scraper (tool), of Neolithic date (2900 BC - 1600 BC). It is sub triangular in plan, and semi-circular in cross section. It consists of a tertiary debitage flake. Along the lower edges, there are signs of regular controlled retouch, indicating reuse as a scraper (tool). Other than the retouch, there is no signs of working such as a bulb of percussion or conchoidal ripples. It has been made out of a honey coloured flint, with an opaque surface patination. This patination occurs through being…

A fragment of a polished stone axe which appears to have been reused as a pestle. The axe had an oval section, 52.6 x 32.6mm, one end of which shows a hackly fracture. The other ends shows the faceted wear typical of a stone pestle or hammer-stone. This has been locally damaged with the loss of a large chip. It has been made from a fine grained rock, grains of quartz being visible in a black matrix. It measures 61.89mm in length, 53.79mm wide and 32.89mm thick. It weighs 171.4 grams. Due to the functional nature of this artefact, it is hard to accurately date it. As it has bee…

A knapped flint discoidal scraper or knife of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date (2900 - 1600 BC). The scraper is broadly oval in plan and lentoid in cross section, formed from a teritary flake. The upper / dorsal face of the scraper exhibits a central ridge. The lower / ventral surface exhibits a series of irregular and uncontrolled flake scars, suggesting movement and damage in the plough soil. The edges of the scraper demonstrates signs of retouch with indirect percussion. Some are uncontrolled in nature, but others are well spaced and neat, creating a serrated edge. Little…
