The head has a circular hole, with an internal diameter of 3.5 mm. Threaded onto the pin, beneath the head is an incomplete piece of pressed decorative copper alloy metal. An incomplete copper alloy Irish halfcrown of James II (AD 1685 to AD 1691), issued as part of the 'Brass Money' or 'Gunmoney' coinage, in AD 1690 (March) at either the Dublin or Limerick mint. Spink, p168, no 6579. Diameter: 31.8 mm Thickness: 2.7 mm Weight: 8.4 g These were official tokens issued in Ireland when James was attempting to recover the English throne and and were supposed to be exchanged for silver coins of equivalent value. They were made from old cannon, bells and scrap metal. James failed in his attempt and the coins were never exchanged.

The book clasp consists of a sub rectangular sheet of copper alloy metal, bent back on itself, with ornate cut edges. Only one arm is present, out of three originally attached. The surviving arm has a suspension loop at the end. The remnants of a second arm are present, with an old break located part way down the length of the arm, and the third arm was broken at the edge of the circular centre.
