A cast copper alloy 'S'-shaped strap or belt fastener, dating to the Post Medieval period (c. 1575-c. 1800 AD). The fastener has two swan or serpent head terminals with necks that curve to form hooks. Each head has a finely moulded beak and eyes, and patterning on the neck possibly represent feathers or scales. The necks narrow below the heads before expanding again towards the centre of the body. At the centre there is a collar consisting of two circumferential lines enclosing a circumferential line of pellets. On either side of these features there are 'leaf' patterns. It was a worn…

Medieval strap fitting in the form of two linked elements. At the top is a D-shaped frame with flat horizontal bar and curved upper edge, 'D' shaped in section with a flattened inner edge. The frame narrows before the curving upper edge creating pointed proejctions at the end of the horizontal bar. The bar widens to a central oval section, through which is a circular perforation. The second element, a pendent loop, is contained within this hole, the loose fit allowing it to rotate freely. The loop consists of a circular sectioned vertical bar with widened end to keep it within the hol…

Medieval cast copper alloy strap slide. The frame is trapezoid with a wider top than base bar. The sides of the frame are rectangular in cross section apart from the top bar which is D shaped with a convex curved top. There is an integral circular rivet projecting outwards 3.7mm from the centre of the base. The frame is 14.6mm wide, 14.6mm long including the rivet and 2.6mm thick, it weighs 1.01 grams. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate a very similar example (page 231, fig 147, No.1239) which they date from the late 13th to the end of the 14th centuries AD.

A cast copper alloy mount with pendant suspended loop of medieval date. It comprises a square plate from which a narrower rectangular strip projects downwards, bending back behind the plate where it slightly expands before narrowing to a point, forming a lozenge shaped terminal. A copper alloy rivet, integrally cast to the reverse of the front plate runs through a hole in this terminal and would have held the fitting to the strap. A copper alloy circular loop, oval in section, is suspended through the bent strip. A small amount of gilding is visible on the loop. The plate measures 26.…

A cast copper alloy late Iron Age to early Roman belt fitting. It is formed from two typical Iron Age style "eye" shapes, each having a prominent dome within a raised circular border.
