A lump of lead whose function or use is uncertain. This unidentified object is also of uncertain date. It weighs 42.19g, and currently has a sub-spherical to sub-cuboid form. Lead is a heavy but soft metal and it is therefore more probable that this artefact started as a sphere and has deformed to gain flatter sides under its own weight. Only one of the surfaces appears markedly different to the others. This has a depressed slot around less than half of the circumference. The slot has a width of 1.9mm and depth of 0.7mm. The diameter of the lump, measured along the axi…

A copper-alloy toilet article, nail cleaner, in the shape of a miniature strigil or sickle. This is presumably used for cleaning a person's fingers while its tip could also effectively be used to clean around and under finger and toe nails. This artefact weighs 1.67g and has a maximum length of 45.9mm. At the proximal end the object terminates in a sub-circular suspension loop of 5.4mm width and 1.2mm thickness. The circular aperture at the centre has a diameter of 3.0mm. Subtle shallow diagonal grooves decorate the outer edges of one side of the loop. The suspensio…

An assemblage of four ceramic items. One spindle whorl and three fragments of ceramic vessel, all of these sherds being of different fabric. Dating is recorded as uncertain as the manufacture date of the whorl could span a wide date range and no pottery specialist has assessed the sherds yet. All items found on the shoreline so may have been washed up from elsewhere. 1 – Ceramic spindle whorl. A ceramic spindle whorl of uncertain date. Spindle whorls were in use between the Iron Age through to the early Post-Medieval period. See https://finds.org.uk/counties/findsrecording…

A lead artefact of uncertain date. This is probably a weight to weigh goods with but may have been used as a small plumb-bob or weight to tension a cord or material instead. Weight is 22.63g (0.80oz) and length is 31.5mm. The cross-section appears to be circular but close inspection shows the sides to be subtly faceted. Some of the facets are much more subtle than others which frustrates counting the total number. At the wider end the diameter is c.9.4mm. c.3.7mm from this terminal the diameter has flared out to 15.2mm. It then contracts gradually to 8.6mm diameter c.2.4mm before the o…

A conical lead weight of uncertain date. This artefact weighs 54.19g (1.91oz) and has a height of 20.6mm. In profile the weight has a trapezoidal shape and a sub-circular cross-section of c.23.0mm diameter at the base tapering to 17.8mm at the top. A perforation passes through the approximate centre of the weight on the height axis. At the flat base of the weight this opening is oval 4.7mm x 3.9mm. At the irregular but mostly flat top the opening is not open but blocked, possibly with a mix of pale brown soil and or rusted iron, possibly with some lead from the slig…

A biconical lead weight. Weights of this form are generally thought to be Roman but the date is uncertain as these can be found on multi-period sites. The weight has a biconical profile and sub-circular shape when viewed from above or below, probably originally circular but now miss-shapen. The remains of an iron attachment loop or some other means of suspension are present in the miss-shapen apex end. In its current condition the weight has a height of 35.2mm including the iron remains. The original diameter, on the well preserved axis, is 42.7mm and on the miss-shapen …

A copper-alloy single loop sub-rectangular buckle frame, pin missing, with forward projecting off-set bar. The dating of these are uncertain. Single loop rectangular buckles can date from c.AD1300 to at least AD1500, see Whitehead R. 2003, pp.26-27, nos.126-133. The recorder suspects that these buckles with forward projecting off-set bars are likely to be for use with horse harness, the dating possibly extending to at least the first half of 20th century AD?  This would give a wide date range of Medieval to the early Modern period. The thinking being that items use…

A conical weight of unknown date. Weight is 12.40g (0.44oz), the diameter at base is 19.6mm from which the walls taper to 7.1mm at the top. Height is 9.0mm. A straight walled cylindrical hole of 3.9mm diameter passes through the approximate centre of the artefact vertically (from flat base to tapered top). This is more likely to have been used as a weight for weighing how heavy something was, rather than as a spindle whorl.

A lead pot mend weighing 8.31g. It has a maximum thickness of 8.2mm and measures 17.0mm x 15.0mm. One side has a sub-oval shape and smoother flattened surface. The other side has greater variation on the thickness axis and a more irregular undefined 'blob' shape. c.2.4mm in from the flatter surface the mend contracts, and would originally have passed through the vessel wall, before expanding on the opposite side. None of the vessel survives around the mend so no dating can be suggested.

An incomplete two piece thimble. Only the domed top of the white metal, probably silver, thimble survives but this has been squashed and bent. Not enough of the artefact survives to be able to accurately date it. However, it was formed by the technique of brazing, sheet metal having been curled round and soldered to form a tube and then the separate domed top applied to one end of that tube. Holmes, E. F. 2004, p.2. states that this technique starts to be used to produce brass thimbles in c. AD1450 though few of these date survive to be found. They can be found…

A tertiary flint pebble flake within which is a large impurity at the proximal end and seen in both ventral and dorsal faces. This is present in the bulb of percussion where it has a chert like texture. Consideration has been given to the suggestion that this might be a reworked adze. If not, and it seems more probable that, this is a core rejuvenation flake tool indicating two attempts to remove the larger impurity. Almost all surfaces over this piece of flint are re-patinated with the exception of a very small percentage of surface area where this has been removed by later …

A sub-square to disc shaped artefact that resembles a token of Medieval to early Post-Medieval date. It weighs 5.38g, measures 17.4mm x 16.9mm with a maximum thickness of 5.1mm. The object appears to be made mainly from lead or lead-alloy. The edges thicken to one side of the artefact's surface and the area within has a browner hue. Use of a magnet produces a strong reaction to both sides of the object. This confirms that the browner area is a patch of iron. It is uncertain whether the presence of this iron metal is by design, if so the purpose is unclear, or accidentally present. No …

A fragment of a ceramic tile of unknown date, probably Post-Medieval to Modern. This sherd weighs 12.0g, has a thickness of 13.3mm and measures 31.1mm x 23.5mm. This sherd is only slightly abraded. The tile has a reduced, mid to dark grey in colour, core and oxidised, orange in colour, upper and lower surface. The lower surface of the tile is much rougher in texture. There might be slight traces of a white substance on this lower surface, possibly the remains of a mortar. However, the sherd is covered in dried mud and it is not possible to study the fragment thoroughly. For the same r…
