Object type: POINT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete finely-worked bone point, possibly Prehistoric. The bone has been carefully worked to create a constant oval-sectioned shaft that tapers gradually into a point. The point has sustained some damage; it is impossible to specify whether this damage was intentional or occurred post-deposition. The opposite end of the tool has broken off, and here the surface of the bone has also been damaged. It appears that this end of the tool would have rounded off, and not continued into another point (as encountered in Saxon double-ended points). The bone point has acquired a dark brown…

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A flint flake or incomplete blade, Mesolithic to Neolithic (8300-2000 BC). The flint is roughly triangular in plan. It has only been shaped on the upper face, where it is convex with a prominent central ridge. The flat back means the whole tool has a triangular section. A recent break at the wide end of the implement has distorted the shape, but it is probably debitage or a broken blade. The flint measures 42.6mm long and weighs 7.29 grams.

Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Prehistoric knapped lithic implement. The flint was recorded at a rally as a lithic implement, and therefore must have shown signs of working. These removals are difficult to discern from the photograph and cannot be described in any more detail. The flint has acquired a milky-white patina, but is dark grey-black in recent removals. It measures 48.7mm long and weighs 7.6 grams.

Record ID: SUSS-06CED2
Object type: LITHIC IMPLEMENT
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: East Sussex
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A Mesolithic to Neolithic flint tool, probably a scraper. Multiple flakes have been removed from the surface, but an area of cortex remains. The exact dimensions of the scraper are missing, but it appears that it would have been suitable as a thumb scraper: a tool designed to be held between thumb and forefinger. It weighs 33.7 grams. Scrapers like this would have had many different functions in the Neolithic, as they were very useful tools, used for example for skinning animals, removing the fatty deposited from hinds and much more.
