A corroded medieval two piece strap fitting, probably a bar mount. The strap fitting is rectangular, with rounded corners. It is formed of a pair of sheets, held together by two rivets; one at each end. The rivets are flattened but uneven. The strap fitting is plain, and both plates are covered in a dark green patina with patches of lighter corrosion. It measures 32.8mm x 10.5mm x 3.1mm, and weighs 2.99g. It can be compared to examples illustrated in Margeson 1993 (39; 22), dated to the 15th-16th century.

A plain elongated pentagonal strap loop with a separate (missing) rivet. Rivet hole in side opposite pentagon point. Egan and Pritchard (1991, 231) note that five sided strap loops have only been found with internally pointing rivets, to hold something within the strap loop. Mainly dated to the late 14th century. External: 13.4mm x 11.5; Internal: 11.2mm x 8.3mm; thickness: 2.3; weight: 0.81g

A medieval cast copper alloy bar mount for a strap or belt. It is rectangular, with three holes; two small holes (one at each end) for attachment and a larger hole between for decoration. The large hole has been counter-sunk from the front of the mount, the smaller holes from the reverse. The large hole is off-centre, cutting into one of the transverse engraved zig zag lines on the front face of the mount. This mount would have one of a set, as shown in Egan and Pritchard (1991 212, fig. 133 ref. 1132). They date similar bar mounts to the late 13th to early 14th century. This example m…

A complete cast copper alloy strap slide of Late Iron Age to Early Roman date (c. 100 BC-c. AD 100). The head is circular in plan. At the front, it has a flat rim with a concave centre and at the rear, excluding the loop, it is slightly convex. There is a small loss on the rim. The loop (11.9mm x 6.4mm x 3.6mm) on the reverse is ā€˜Dā€™-shaped in side profile and sub-square in cross-section, the hole is sub-ovoid. The object is covered in a mid-green patina, with patches of a light green patina. The concave head may have contained a decorative material. However, none has survived. It i…

An incomplete post medieval copper alloy sword belt fitting. The object is roughly foliate in form, with incised decoration forming a leaf pattern. It has a trefoil shaped terminal at one end and would have had a hook at the other but this is now missing. There are two circular fixing holes one near the trefoil terminal and one visible in the break, which would have been above the hook. This would have been one of two or three fittings that together formed a hanging arrangement for a sword, date 16th-17th century. It measures 29.2mm and weighs 4.8g

An incomplete medieval copper alloy composite strap end. One of the plates is missing, revealing the inner forked spacer still attached to the other plate. The remaining plate is undecorated. At one end the strap end curves inwards to a point (the tip of which has broken off the plate but remains on the spacer). At the opposite end the plate has broken or worn away to a rough diagonal, with the spacer protruding beyond. There are two rivets in situ on the strap end, one at the either end (and one of which that connects the plate to the spacer). The spacer is thicken than the plate but …

A worn post medieval copper-alloy strap fitting with two attachment spikes. The body of the mount is an elongated triangle with a rounded knop instead of a point. On the shortest edge is a tri-lobed knop, which could be a crown or a fleur-de-lis. The outer lobes have been bent backwards, and the tip of the central knop has possibly broken off. On the triangular body of the mount has incised lines creating arrows pointing towards the tri-lobed terminal. No other decoration is visable. On the reverse, there is an attachment spike (c. 9mm long)just to the central of the rounded knop term…

A post medieval copper alloy belt or strap attachment. The attachment is formed of a plate with a keyhole shaped cut out in the centre. This would have been one half a connective attachment; the other half would have had a mushroom shaped protrusion which would have slide inside the hole and been held in the narrower part of the hole. One end of the main plate is rounded with an in situ attachment rivet and irregular heptagon washer. Held between the washer and the plate is the remains of the fabric of the strap, and a dark stain on the plate around the rivet and washer was probably c…

A copper-alloy snake or dragon form strap fitting or fastener of post-medieval to modern date. The artefact is 'S-shaped'. The terminals take the form of the neck and head of dragon like animal with clear ears, eyes, an upturned snout and open jaw. The neck is thin, of pointed-oval section and forms a broad curve. At the centre of the object, dividing the two animals, is a convex moulding with two projection points moulded in the round. An area of scales or pine cone like decoration flanks the central disc on each side. One neck area is heavily worn, suggesting that side took the weig…

It has a trefoil shaped terminal at one end and would have had a hook at the other but this is now missing. There is a small, circular fixing hole in the trefoil terminal and one above the hook which has been the weak-point for fracture; the plate is now broken across this rivet hole. The two arms are identically shaped and decorated with an attachment hook on the curve that connects them. From the attachment curve each arm has two horizontal border which project out of each side by approximately 2mm. Between the two borders the edges are convex and there is an in-situ rivet in the centre of each section (one of which has a rough disc of hammered metal on the reverse; maximum length of rivet is 5.9mm). A corroded post-medieval copper-alloy strap-fitting from a sword belt, with corroded remnants of two iron rivets. It comprises a curvilinear section with three projections on each side and one smaller projection on one end, attached to a broken circular section (15.9mm by 9.4mm remaining) with a slot through its centre, which tends towards cruciform. Adjacent to one side of the circular section is a smaller circular loop (10.1 mm by 9.2mm), which is at an obtuse angle from the curvilinear section. The circular section and loop are bent, curving upwards from the curvilinear section. The…

A complete cast copper-alloy late Roman 'propeller' belt stiffener; usually associated with the late Roman military, they continue to be used into the early fifth century. They are common site finds especially along the Northern frontiers (Bishop and Coulston 1993, 173-4; refs. 3 and 5). 'Propeller' belt stiffeners have a central roundel and two opposing triangular terminals. This example is flat, with a circular rivet hole through the centre of the end of the triangular terminals. One rivet survives in the hole, protruding 3.8mm from the back of the fitting. The centre roundel is deco…

A bent and incomplete post-medieval cast copper-alloy hooked plate probably from a sword-belt mount. The body of the object is ovoid, with perforated semicircular protrusion at one end, and the broken shaft of the hook at the other. The tag depicts a helmeted and bearded man looking right, with a trefoil shaped object (an arrow? or leaf?) attached to the top of his helmet, through which a second attachment hole is pierced. On either side of the bar attaching the trefoil is a pellet, and there are two raised but corroded areas to either side of the man's neck. The lower surface is plai…

A complete medieval copper-alloy shell-shaped belt mount with rivet and rove. On the front face of the mount lines and curves have been engraved into the surface, forming the radiating lines mimicking a shell. In the centre the in situ rivet is flush with the surface, but of a lighter green patina, indicating a different alloy. The reverse of the shell is concave, with the rivet and attachment rove protruding from the centre. Similar shell mounts or studs can be found in Egan and Pritchard (1991, 200-201; refs. 1082, 1083) and on this database (YORYM-0AB554) dating to the early to mid …

A complete post-medieval copper-alloy two part sword-belt fitting (strap-fitting). The two elements are connected via an integral ring on the smaller element and a hook (possibly with a zoomorphic point or tip) on the larger. The larger piece (length 47.6 mm) is the standard foliate shape found on a number of comparable fittings on the database; it is sub-triangular, with a widening immediately beyond to the hook (although one side has been severely worn), then a sharp narrowing, then widens again, narrows again and ends in the maximum width, with curved corners into a trilobed side e…
