Object type: BLADE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A neolithic flint blade dating to 3500-2100 BC. It is light grey and all cortex has been removed. The ventral surface has a smooth bulb of percussion; the dorsal surface has a central ridge and evidence of re-touch. The distal end of the blade has broken off leaving a straight break. The shape and side of this flint flake suggests it was a small blade or cutting tool. It measures 39.4mm (length) x 15.9mm (width) x 4.5mm (thickness) and weighs 2.55g.

Object type: TRANCHET AXEHEAD
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Published Find published
A complete knapped flint 'Thames pick' trancet axe core tool of Mesolithic date. All the cortex has been removed, however part of the butt end may be unknapped. The opposite end narrows to a shallow point. The upper surface has a high central longitudinal ridge, bevelled to each side. The lower surface is far shallower, bevelled to each side, with longer, far more shallow, removals all over. The sides are fairly straight and slightly battered but the removals are generally fairly crisp. The flint is dark grey with patches of lighter grey-yellow. It measure 169mm (length) x 50.6mm (wid…

Object type: SCRAPER (TOOL)
Broad period: MESOLITHIC
County: Greater London Authority
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete mesolithic flint flake scraper. It is an uneven but rounded in shape. Previous removals can be seen as scars on the dorsal surface, all in the same direction as the ripple marks on the ventral surface. There is also possible retouching on the dorsal surface edges. The scraper is a curving and triangular in section and it measures 68.3mm (length) x 51.4mm (width) x 6.8mm (thickness) and weighs 20.70g. Jon Cotton suggests that this flake is a re-used thinning flake from an adze, which explains its uneven shape and curving profile.

Record ID: HAMP-BF8AC0
Object type: FLAKE
Broad period: NEOLITHIC
County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An undiagnostic flint flake, as such attributed a general prehistoric date (Neolithic to Bronze Age). It has almost completely weathered to a light hue, but chips in the surface reveal a grey/blue colour beneath. It is roughly D-shaped but damaged around its edges, probably from ploughing. The dorsal face has many, and often long, removals. In contrast, the ventral face is almost perfectly smooth. It is probably a waste flake, but may have been utilised.
