The fragment contains a chipped away projecting ring (not complete); its curve suggests that this piece is from a small jar or cup. Seven fragments of differing forms of greyware, probably Roman in date. All the pieces are small thick walled vessels, three are rim fragments, two are base fragments and two are body fragments. Not enough of any fragment has survived to identify the form. They range in colour from light to grey ware, some with light orange surfaces. One is possibly slipped, otherwise they are undecorated. All are wheelmade. The size range is 27.7-50.4mm (length) x 15.5-33.8mm (width) x 9.0-14.1mm (thickness) and collectively weigh 94.40g.

A fragment of Roman ceramic decorated samianware vessel. No original edges survive, and all the breaks are worn and rounded. Both the external and internal face are covered in red slip; the external face is decorated in relief with alternately swirls in roundals and animals in roundals with linear rope-effect borders between. The internal face is plain. The fragment measures 74.2mm (length) x 40.8mm (width) x 12.2mm (thickness) and weighs 36.01g.

A rim fragment from a Roman ceramic vessel. The fabric is uncertain, but is dark grey and even throughout with dark grey medium to large inclusions. The rim is upright but has a projecting rounded collar. The fragment measures 66.2mm (length) x 43.4mm (width) x 21.7mm (thickness) and weighs 40.8g.
As the fabric and vessel is uncertain, a broad Roman date is suggested.

A rim fragment of a Roman black burnished ware bowl. The rim is smoothly curved, and both the internal and external faces of the bowl are undecorated. The three breaks are almost straight. The fabric is brown (in the breaks) with a black burnished surface. It measures 77.4mm (length) x 46.2mm (width) x 7.7mm (thickness) and weighs 43.7g.
Black burnishware bowls date to c. 2nd century AD (Davies et al 1994, 107).

A bunghole fragment from a medieval coarse Surrey/Hampshire borderware cistern. The bunghole is ring-shaped; it contains part of the wall of the cistern and an additional attached fluted disc of the same fabric, which has then had a circular removal taken from the centre. The fabric is light grey with small to large flint and grit inclusions. It measures 52.1mm (length) x 46.9mm (width) x 22.2mm (thickness) x 17.7.mm (diameter of hole) and weighs 46.37g.
Cisterns are a common form of coarseware vessel, and are the only ones to have bungholes. The cisterns were made from c.1340 to 14…

A rim fragment of a medieval ceramic south Hertfordshire-type greyware vessel. The fragment contain the widened rim and the separately applied thumbprint border. The breaks have created a rectangular fragment; each break is worn and old. The fabric is completely grey but there is some later corrosive red staining. The fragment measures 76.6mm (length) x 34.4.mm (width) x 21.0mm (thickness) and weighs 49.41g.
South Hertfordshire-type greyware dates to c. 1170-1350 AD.

A handle fragment of a post medieval glazed Surrey/Hampshire redware cup. The upper join of the handle has attached part of the rim and internal face of the cup. At the lower join the break is on the join itself, so none of the body of the cup is attached. The cup is internally glazed with a clear glaze. The fragment measures 69.2mm (height) x 56.4mm (width) x 14.1mm (thickness) and weighs 54.52g.
This style of redware cup dates to the late 17th to early 18th century AD.

Four fragments from post medieval ceramic frechen stoneware bellarmine jugs.
Three pieces are body sherds contain parts of coats of arms which decorated one side of the jugs. The fourth is a rim fragment containing a series of raised and recessed collars parallel with the rim.
Body sherd 1 measures 61.2mm (length) x 42.4mm (width) x 7.1mm (thickness) and weighs 20.44g.
Body sherd 2 measures 27.3mm (length) x 21.8mm (width) x 8.0mm (thickness) and weighs 5.99g.

A base fragment of a Roman ceramic mica-dusted ware vessel, probably a small jar. The base is circular (33.9mm diameter) and the remains of the body slightly curve outward to a point 16.7mm above the base, at which point they rapidly expand. There is one continuous but jagged break line, and the rest of the vessel is missing. The fragment measures 31.8mm (heigh) x 56.7mm (width) x 4.6mm (thickness) and weighs 25.69g.

A body fragment of a Roman ceramic samian ware vessel with external decoration. It is from a DR30 straight sided bowl. The external face is decorated in relief with a pictoral scene of a child feeding a goat with a scrolling border above. The fragment measures 44.2mm (length) x 37.5mm (width) x 4.6mm (thickness) and weighs 6.82g.
Samian ware was imported from Gaul (modern France and Western Germany); this fragment is likely to be from Southern or Central Gaul and date to c. 50-100 AD.

The fabric is light red, the interior face is completely covered in a cream slip and green glaze and the exterior has splashes of a clear glaze. The exterior is also blackened from being used over or near a fire, suggesting this is a cooking vessel. The fragment measures 58.9mm (length) x 44.4mm (width) x 8.3mm (thickness) and weighs 27.7g.
Post medieval slipped redware with a green glaze dates to c. 1480-1650 AD.

Siegburg wares dates to c.13th century AD. Siegburg is in modern north-west Germany.
