A medieval cast copper alloy composite strap end with solid sheet spacer. The strap end consists of two plates separated by a solid spacer for approximately one-third of the length. The plates and spacer are held together by an in situ copper alloy rivet (which is the same colour as the plates, indicating a similar or identical alloy was used). The rivet is flush with both of the plate's outer surfaces. This end of the strap end has an angled edge, culminating in a rounded knop (which is made from all three parts of the strap end). There is a second rivet hole in the central of the opp…

An almost complete early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end (Thomas Class A). The strap-end made from one solid piece of copper alloy with a split terminal at one end. It is this end of the artefact which is broken; the upper edge contains the remains of the two circular attachment hole. The lower plate of the split is mostly gone, with a rough edge remaining. The front face of the strap-end is decorated with silver inlay, however too little remains to distinguish the any pattern. The copper-alloy terminal tip is moulded to form an animal's head, with two recessed areas as eyes. An …

Both sheet plates from a medieval copper-alloy strap-end (c. 15th century), found separately and since affixed to each other by the finder. The plate are sub-rectangular, with a pointed terminal and a slightly cabled attachment end. Near the attachment end is a rivet hole. On the outer surface of one of the plates is an incised representation of a bishop standing three quarters facing left, holding a crozier in his right hand and the Bible in his left. He wears vestments and a mitre and stands on a tiled floor. The scene is contained within a border. One the other plate incised lines…

A fragment of an early-medieval cast copper-alloy openwork strap-end, Thomas Class E, Type 1 (cf. Thomas 2003, 2-3; fig. 4). The fragment has three sub-oval holes towards its rounded terminal. The broken edge above has four cutouts (two semicircular, two triangular). The upper surface has incised decoration between the three oval holes; two curved lines with four transverse 'rib' lines between. On the lower surface are two more incised lines, one halving the length the object, the other diagonally across the width. The object has corroded to a dark red-brown colour with patches of lig…

A medieval copper alloy two-piece strap-end, with elaborate terminal (c. 15th century). The terminal of the strap-end was created by a number of removals from the sides, to form a trefoil connected to a circle, with a collar below. On the upper surface of the main body of the front plate there is cruciform decoration made from rocker arm zig-zags. There are two central in-situ rivets, one at each end, which are flush with the surface of both plates. The strap-end is covered in a dark green patina with small areas of corrosion. The terminal has been bent downwards slightly. The object i…

A large corroded medieval composite strap end. The strap end is five sided, a trapezoid leading to a pointed terminal, with rounded corners. It is formed of a pair of sheets, with a thick sheet spacer between, held together by three rivets; one at the centre of the terminal end, and one in each corner of the attachment end. The rivets are flush with the surface of the plates. The attachment edge is serrated on one plate; there is evidence that the other plate may have been as well. The strap end measures 44.9mm x 42.7mm x 4.6mm and weighs 24.27g. There does not appear to be any decorat…

A slightly corroded medieval two piece strap-end. The strap-end is trapezoidal, narrowing gradually to a rounded end. It is formed of a pair of sheets; no sheet spacer is evident. The strap-end is held together by a pair of rivets; both at the attachment end, one in each corner. The rivets protrude from one side of the strap end by 1.6mm. At the attachment end, the plates are still separated, to allow for the strap. The object has a mid-green patina with some areas of lighter corrosion product; it measures 20.5mm x 8.5mm x 2.6mm, and weighs 0.9g. It can be dated to the later 14th centu…

A slightly corroded medieval composite strap-end. The strap-end is trapezoidal, narrowing gradually to a rounded end with pointed terminal protrusion. It is seemingly formed of a pair of sheets; no sheet spacer is evident. The strap-end is held together by a pair of rivets, one central at the attachment end, the other central just above the terminal. At the attachment end, the plates are still separated, to allow for the strap; one plate is shorter than the other (34.9mm/33.2mm) and has a rough and uneven edge, suggesting part has snapped off. The terminal end they are riveted shut, wi…

An external plate from a medieval sub-rectangular three piece composite strap-end. The terminal knop is rounded, and the terminal itself has a curved edge. At the other end there is a surviving rivet in situ. The plate is plain and has a mid-green patina. It can be dated to the later 14th century by comparison with examples illustrated in Egan and Pritchard 1991 (142; fig. 93).

An upper sheet plate fragment from a medieval strap-end. The plate is sub-rectagular but with a pointed terminal end with slight central rounded knop. It would have been the upper sheet plate of a composite strap-end, but its attachment end has been damaged. The upper surface is decorated with incised lines; along each side is a longitudinal linear border; a central longitudinal line running from terminal tip to the broken edge is crossed by three diagonal lines, equally spaced along the length of the plate. The lower surface, as it would not been visible, is undecorated. The broken, a…

A worn early-medieval cast copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas Class B, Type 1. The attachment end is wedge-shaped and split (max. W.: 7.8mm), but the terminal has snapped off. The upper layer has snapped diagonally, leaving half of one perforation for a rivet. The bottom layer has snapped off horizontally but outlines the base of the two perforations. The field of the attachment end is decorated with three circular facets; two are centred and vertically aligned, the third to the left of the centre. A possible fourth would be in the missing section (creating a pair). The base of the atta…
