County: Hampshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Probably a Roman copper alloy harness mount or stud. The mount is circular with a raised dome in the centre. There is a raised circular band halfway between the dome and the outer edge of the mount. On the reverse is the remains of either two rivets or part of a loop, in the centre of the mount. The Roman date is suggested due to its similarity to the harness mounts/studs found in Chapman (2005, 138-139; cf. tg08, tg09 & tg18).

A post-medieval cast copper-alloy hooked mount. The central portion of the mount is sub-oval in plan and domed, with a hollow underside. Extending upwards from the top is rounded lobe which has a central rivet hole (with an iron rivet still in situ), a transverse ridge at its base and a narrow, rounded projection at the top. At the base of the mount is a transverse ridge above a backward-facing hook. A similar mount is illustrated by Read (2008, 227; ref. 816), who believes it to be 17th century in date and suggests that such objects were designed to suspend sword scabbards from belts.

A cast copper alloy mount of probable medieval date. The mount is a square, seemingly plain and the edges are bevelled, but a trace of gilding can be seen on one edge. The reverse has an integral rivet and square rove (of which one corner has bent inwards). The mount measures 15.1mm (corner to corner) x 11.2mm (side to side)x 1.3mm (7.8mm with rivet), and weighs 0.87g. The date is suggested from the rivet and rove is medieval, but the lack of decoration makes close dating hard.

An incomplete post medieval gilded copper alloy rectangular mount. The mount roughly rectangular but with four semi-circular cutouts (two on either side) creating a 'bow' shape. The face is partially covered in gilding, the rest of the mount is covered in a green patina. It is possible that the face has relieve decoration, which the corrosion has masked. On the reverse are two integral spikes or prongs, which are both broken at about 10mm. The mount is comparable to those in Read (2001 36, fig. 21), and a decorated example is illustrated in Griffiths et al (2007 215, ref. 3013); these …

A complete medieval (or possibly later) gilded copper-alloy helmet shaped mount (stud). It is curved in profile, with a centrally-placed integral square-section attachment spike on the lower surface. It is in the form of a 'Great Helm', with a characteristically flat top. The front of the helmet has horizonal slots (called 'sights') and vertical and cross-shaped slots (called 'breaths'). The mount has an angled face, which forms a ridge along the centre (on helmets this allows for the wearer's nose); on each side is a sight with two rows of breaths. The top row of breaths is comprised…

A probably complete medieval cast copper-alloy casket mount (c. 13th century). At one end of the mount is a flattened rectangle (Th.: c. 2.6mm), plain apart from a single rivet hole in the centre. Beyond this, the mount thickens and is split into four linear segments of varying sizes. The first is a trapezoid, with the upper surface decorated with transverse grooves, within a plain border. This segment is separated from the next by a collar with diagonal grooves (cabling). In the terminal is a circular rivet hole, and the edge of terminal copies the curve of the hole. The other end of the mount has a rough edge indicating an old break. The mount is covered on one face with relief moulding; the reverse is plain but with a recessed centre. The mount is covered in a mid-green patina over a red-brown metal. A Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic stud or mount. The majority of the mount is a cockerel moulded in the round, sitting on a sub-rectangular block. The bird has a moulded comb and incisions delineated its neck and tail. The block has two collars, and has a hole in its centre, between the transverse collars. From the block, the mount narrows into a pointed shank. A similar mount was found at the excavations at Gorhambury, illustrated in Neal et al. (1990, 128, 130; ref. 200), in a 2nd-century context. Another example can be found on this database: ref. LIN-AE15C1. This example has a d…

A corroded medieval tinned cast copper alloy circular domed stud. The body of the mount is a hollow dome, plain on both faces apart from patches of tinning. On the reverse there is a centrally placed shaft or rivet for attachment; the stud was cast as one piece, not two. The rivet is bent into a slight 'C' shape, has a blunt end, and also has patches of tinning. The mount is otherwise covered in a dark green patina, with patches of red-brown corrosion. Egan and Pritchard dates similar plain domed studs to the late fourteenth century (1991 170). This example measures 16.1mm (dia.) x 14.…

A copper alloy rectangular mount of probable post medieval date. The mount is formed of three levels of rectangles, one within another which all have bevelled and sloping faces. They are not quite symmetric, and the highest rectangle is off-centre, suggesting that the mould was hand-made. The back of the mount is concave. Within the recessed area is iron corrosion, and a small corroded central stump, which suggests that the original attachment was made of iron.
