A complete enamelled copper-alloy late Iron Age to early Roman strap fitting/harness fitting or baldric. The object consist of a penannular loop with a U-shaped section joining the gap. The loop is oval in shape and D-shaped in cross-section with a rounded outer edge and flattened inner edge. It is pierced with a small oval hole through the centre of its upper edge. It has a small gap in the centre of one of the longer sides and a short arm of the same width as the hoop projects downwards to either side. A complete copper-alloy medieval multi-component strap fitting. The object consists of three separate sections. One of the two outer sections is a bar mount with loop featuring square plate with an arm projecting from the centre of its inner edge that curves round towards its reverse, culminating in a smaller lozenge-shaped plate. An integral rivet projects from the centre of the reverse of the square plate passing through a hole in the centre of the lozenge-shaped plate and connecting them together. The other outer section consists of a long str…

A complete copper-alloy strap fitting of uncertain date. The object is a horizontally flattened, sub-oval loop shape with one side slightly straighter than the other. It has a pointed oval cross-section. There are areas of greater wear on each longer side, perhaps where a strap was attached originally, suggesting that it may be a section of horse gear. The surface of the metal is heavily worn and corroded. Without further diagnostic details the object is difficult to date precisely as loops such as these were used as strap and harness fittings from the Iron Age onwards.

An incomplete cast copper-alloy Medieval pendant loop dating to the later 14th century. It comprises an incomplete bar mount and quatrefoil loop. One of the lobes is squared with a recessed bar across its outer end where it is attached to an in situ simple copper-alloy strap mount. Thias is formed of sheet metal and is wrapped around the bar with a rivet hole at either end.  See Egan and Pritchard (1991, 221, fig.138, no.1189) for comparison. These are of later 14th century date (ibid., 26, fig.13).

A complete copper-alloy late Iron Age to Roman zoomorphic strap or harness fitting. It is composed of two adjoining sections - a circular loop and a zoomorphic terminal that projects to one side. The loop is circular in cross-section and is 20mm in external diameter and 9.96mm thick. The zoomorphic terminal is shaped like an animal's head with a wide face and protruding, upwards-pointing snout. A beaded raised line runs longitudinally down each side of the face, meeting under the chin and developing into eyebrows at the upper end. Below these the eyes are formed from…

A complete copper-alloy medieval or post-medieval strap fitting. It consists of a bar mount made from a long strip of copper-alloy, slightly wider at either end, folded in two and secured with two rivets. The rivets may be iron as the reverse is covered with iron corrosion. A simple copper-alloy hoop, oval in cross-section with wear in multiple places, sits within the fold at the lower end. Egan and Pritchard (1991) illustrate similar, finer examples from excavations in London all found in late 14th century contexts, but simple examples like this one may be later.  Len…
