A silver gilt post-medieval boatswain's whistle. The whistle consists of a globular sounding chamber made in two pieces and soldered together around the middle. A tubular barrel attaches to just beneath the sounding chamber's hole. The barrel has a small loop underneath which would have been used to secure the whistle onto a cord or such like. There is a collar around either end of the barrel. There is an unidentified maker's or owner's mark on the top of the barrel which appears to be in the form of a letter 'A'. There is also a small mark on one side of the sounding chamber, possibl…

An incomplete but well preserved lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The whistle is cast in the form of a dog's head with a wide collar displaying the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog is biting on an iron pin, which presumably would have formed a suspension ring. The dog's face is well rendered however its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed although some type of hunting hound seem likely. There is traces of gilding around one eye socket. The front of the whistle has an open tube with curved lip with a (now loose) insert to direct the air th…

An incomplete lead alloy (pewter) hunting whistle of post-medieval to modern date. The front of the whistle is hollow cast in the form of a dog's head, which is the only surviving element. The whistle section would have been integrally cast but is now missing due to an old break. Some examples of this type of whistle have a wide collar and the word 'DOG' on one side. The dog's face is well rendered but its likeness cannot be assigned to a specific breed; some type of hunting hound seem likely. Although these are usually described as hawking whistles, I suspect that they could have b…

Object type: WHETSTONE
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
These items form part of a collection of 60 sherds of Roman and Medieval pottery and other finds that were submitted for identification in November 2009. The two whetstones that were submitted are, like the nails very hard to date without contextual information. Whetstones have been in use for many hundreds of years. On whetstone is perforated, probably for suspension; this practice was not common during the Roman period. These whetstones may date anywhere from the post Roman period (AD 410) into the post-medieval period.

A very fine early medieval polished whetstone pendant, made from a light black stone. There is a suspension hole at the top which has been pierced fom both sides to give a clean even finish. There are numerous shallow linear scores visible on both sides of the whetstone. This whetstone was probably used for the final finishing sharpening rather than the initial sharpening. The whetstone measures 76.50mm long, 13.91mm wide and 6.89mm thick. It weighs 15 grams.

An incomplete whetstone of uncertain date, but possibly post-medieval. The whetstone appears similar to some Neolithic axes but is not in fact an axe, and its size and form suggests that it was used for sharpening tools, possibly agricultural tools.

Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Oxfordshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A rectangular lead alloy weight. The weight has an uneven but mostly convex front and a flat reverse. The reverse has randomly placed scores on the back that may be related to the object's manufacturing. A large square hole has been made through the upper portion of the weight from back to front, resulting in an uneven lip on the front. These objects are difficult to date but the maufacturing appears crude and local - this weight may date from the Roman to early post-Medieval periods. The weight is 47.99mm long, 37.03mm wide and is 17.74mm thick. It weighs 140.80gms.

Two small weights, the first being an oval lead alloy weight with central perforation measuring 22.07mm long with a maximum width of 18.97mm. The central hole diameter is 3.45mm and the object weighs 34.1gms. The second weight is trapezoidal and also of lead alloy again with a central perforation. This weight is 14.48mm long, 19.96mm wide and the hole measures 3.67mm diameter. It weighs 28.00gms. Both of these objects are either net / line or loom weights, but they may be too small for effective use as loom weights. Without strstigraphic information these weights may date from th…

A lead alloy net or hem weight, conical in shape with a flat peak and base. There is a small indentation on the base of the weight but no perforation. The weight is 13.13mm in diameter, 11.47mm thick and weighs 14.6gms. Plain lead weights are hard to date and maybe anywhere between the Roman and Post-medieval periods, although this is more likely to date to the earlier time period. This weigh is associated with the two net / loom weights recorded as BERK-FBFC68.

A lead alloy hem or net weight, oval in shape and measuring 15.08mm diameter, 9.88mm thick and weighing 11.2gms. Undecorated lead weights are hard to date and could be anywhere from Roman to Post-medieval in date. A small post-medieval cup weight of copper alloy. The weight is plain other than the maker's mark (a ?B) and the counterstamp (a fleur-de-lys) on the inside of the weight. There is also a small double lined circle on the outer rim, although it is unclear if this is another maker's mark or part of the manufacturing process. The weight measures 30.51mm diameter and 12.23mm thick. It weighs 21.7gms or 0.77oz.

A circular lead alloy weight, possibly used for hunting or fishing nets, or possibly for a small loom / scales. The weight has a sub-circular hole through its core. Lead objects are very hard to date as they are generally undiagnostic and did not change in use or manufacture for many years, therefore this weight cannot be dated to closer than the Roman to Post-medieval periods.

A collection of four disc-shaped lead alloy weights of varying sizes. 1) 475gms, 57.55mm diameter, 23.70mm thick. 2) 54.9gms, 28.62mm diameter, 8.69mm thick. 3) 28.7gms, 27.26mm diameter, 5.28mm thick. This weight has a single scored line running across its diameter on both faces. 4) 23gms, 24.61mm diameter, 7.44mm thick. Although plain lead weights are extremely hard to date, these have been found along with other mostly Roman artefacts, so it is likely that they date from this period.

A cast copper alloy trade weight dating to the 18th century. The weight is circular and has a shallow raised rim, plain on the reverse and with four stamped symbols on the face. These symbols are: a sword (for St Paul's, City of London) at 12 o'clock; a now illegible symbol, which would have been a crowned letter G for King George at 3 o'clock; a ewer (for the London Founder's Company) at 6 o'clock; and an A for avoirdupois (the weight system) at 9 o'clock. A small circular lead alloy weight, with outwardly-sloping sides, suggesting it has been moulded from a cup-type weight. A reverse S surrounded by double-lined border adorns the larger face.
