A worn and damaged cast lead alloy token or tally of post-medieval date. The token if bifacial, having cast motifs on either side. One side depicts a multi-spoked star (or possibly a crude tree) while the other depicts an uncertain design - possibly a sun with rays, or possibly a cock's head. If the latter then this may be a cock-shy token, a gaming piece used in conjunction with a toy lead cockrel. Shy-cocks may have derived from the Shrove Tuesday pursuit of casting stones or cudgels at a live cockerel which was either tied down or buried up to its neck in the ground (Forsyth & Egan…

An incomplete sheet copper alloy buckle plate strap end of medieval date. The plate is broadly tongue-shaped in plan with one straight and one pointed terminal. The upper surface of the plate is decorated with a pattern of engraved zigzags ('rocker-arm') in a herring bone arrangement. There are two separate copper alloy rivets either side of a circular hole; an indentation through this hole suggests wear from a pin. The reverse of the sheet is plain - this is probably part of a two-piece, composite strap end / buckle dating to the period AD 1250-1400. For a strap-end with similar deco…

County: West Berkshire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete worked flint pick of Neolithic date. The pick has been formed on a nodule of mottled grey/white flint with iron staining evident of the crests of the removals. The flint has been bifacially worked and a removal across the butt does look tranchet-like but on closer inspection this has been ruled out. The tip of the pick is has a large ridge behind it with multi-directional removals on the side of the tip. Suggested date Neolithic 4000-2000 BC.

A complete cast copper alloy annular brooch of medieval date. The brooch is small in diameter, comprising a flat annular ring with constriction for the intact pin, which is also of copper alloy. There is traces of silvering on both the brooch and the pin. The upper side of the brooch has an inscription but it is too worn to decipher - it may be a pseudo inscription, something that is regularly seen on this type of brooch. The letter appears to comprise Vs, E, and possibly an M and a T - possibly something like 'AMIE TV ES MA VIE' meaning 'Friend, you are my life', although the letteri…
